A Highland woman told police that she stole a 26-inch television from the after she couldn't afford to buy one as a Christmas present that she promised her son because she lost her job, according to a report from the Livingston County Sheriff's Department.

Police recovered the set from the 34-year-old's residence two days after they and witnesses say she took it from Walmart after attempting to exchange it, the report says.

The woman, who has no previous criminal record, also is accused of taking a pair of pants and exchanging them for $16, although she told police she had brought the pants from another Walmart, the report said. Employees made the exchange without a receipt because she provided her driver's license information, which is how the police tracked her down, the report said.

According to the report, the following is how the woman came to be a suspect: Employees became suspicious on Jan. 5 after the woman at first attempted to exchange the HDTV set — worth $258 — for a smaller size but then wanted a larger one. The employee also noticed that her son had grabbed an empty cart that was now being used for the set. When employees denied the exchange, the woman left with the TV and it wasn't until video footage was reviewed that Walmart security called police after watching her enter the store with nothing and pick up the jeans and TV, the report said.

The case — in which police seek charges — has been forwarded to the prosecutor's office for review, the report said.
