Suspicious Man Reported Near Hartland Day Care Center

Stranger danger alert issued Wednesday in letter to parents.

A report of a suspicious man who was beckoning children to "come here" from the woods in Hartland village area has prompted Hartland School District officials to warn parents.

The man fled the scene after children participating in an afterschool program at the 51 Buiding reported his presence to staff at about 5 p.m. Tuesday. The building, 10235 School St, houses the .

"I realize that this is a disturbing situation for our parents and children," Hartland Superintendent Janet Sifferman said in an email sent to parents Wednesday.

"Please know that our staff, in conjunction with the police department, will continue to do everything possible to ensure the safety of your children. Additional program supervision will be added to the afterschool program at the 51 Building and the police and our director of security, Mike Capra, have also been apprised of the situation."

The Livingston County Sheriff's Department was notified Wednesday of the incident and is working with Capra as it investigates, Lt. Jim Lynch said.

"We will conduct extra patrols in the area," Lynch said.

Lynch encouraged anyone with information about the case to contact the department at 517-546-2440.

Lynch and the the email advised parents to remind their children not to talk to strangers and to report supscious activity.

"This letter is not intended to incite panic or hysteria, but to make you aware of a possible danger in the district so that you can provide your children with the necessary information so they can act if needed to keep themselves safe," the letter said.
