Denby Visits Local Schools in Honor of Reading Month, Michigan Jumps in Tax Rating

Lawmaker who represents Hartland provides updates and views on various topics.

By Cindy Denby

March is reading month, which is a great time to get out a good book and read to the kids in your life. Literacy is so important for our children's future, and we should all encourage children to build upon the reading skills they have already learned. Reading to a young person can take them on a journey to a different time and place and expand their horizons.

I am looking forward to visiting local schools this month and sharing my love of reading with Michigan's brightest young minds. Reading with a child has so many benefits- not only do they value the personal attention that comes when you read them a story, but a reading hobby that starts early becomes a reading hobby for life. That makes this month a great time to not only help develop a reading hobby in every child but also to foster genuine enjoyment for reading.

Michigan's reinvention got another push in a positive direction last month. Gov. Snyder recently announced that our corporate tax ranking on the State Business Tax Climate Index has increased again. A few months ago we made the leap from 49th in the nation to 18th. More recent reports project our tax ranking to be upgraded even further to 12th in the country.

These positive gains were due in large part to recent changes in the tax structure. The Tax Foundation said that these reforms are "a major improvement for Michigan's business tax system." This is proof that if we continue to work together and make necessary changes, we can keep propelling Michigan forward and solidify new business opportunities in our state now and into the future.
