Shopping at farmers markets is a great way to support our local farmers and producers while helping our local economy. We are fortunate to have several farmers markets in our local communities.

  • Hartland hosts its farmers market and flea market every Saturday from May through October from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Hartland Educational Support Service Center on Highland Road just west of US-23.
  • Fowlerville hosts its farmers market from May through October on Wednesdays from 2 to 7 p.m. in the 200 block of West Grand River.
  • Howell also hosts a farmers market on Sundays through the end of October from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. next to the Livingston County Courthouse.
  • Brighton's farmers market runs every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. through the end of October at the First Street Municipal Lot in downtown Brighton.

I encourage everyone to check out these markets and see what they have to offer and support our local growers.

As lots of Michigan families are heading out for well-deserved summertime vacations, the Insurance Institute of Michigan (IIM) is warning homeowners that burglaries are also on the rise during this time. In addition to making sure your insurance policy is up to date, the IIM recommends taking preventative measures to prevent burglaries.

Homeowners are encouraged to add additional dead-bolt window and door locks that would make it more time consuming to break into your home. IIM also recommends investing in a burglar alarm as well as making sure your outside doors and garage doors are strong and secure. Before leaving for any trip, unplug your computer and disconnect it from the Internet.

Also make sure that your computer has a password so what your personal information is difficult to access if someone were to use your computer. Lastly, be sure to keep valuables under lock and key and out of sight and keep copies of important documents at another location. As an extra bonus, adding safety measures to your home can result in discounts on your insurance policy.
