Lawmaker Urges Residents to Have A Fun and Safe Fourth of July

Lawmaker who represents Hartland provides updates and views on various topics.

By Cindy Denby

Summer is in full swing and 4th of July is somehow already here. When preparing for this great holiday, I want to remind residents that Michigan's fireworks law has seen some changes since last 4th of July. The Michigan Fireworks Safety Act, that ended the ban against projectile fireworks and explosives such as firecrackers, went into effect at the start of 2012.

Michigan residents can now buy consumer-grade fireworks without worrying of being penalized. Consumer-grade fireworks are more powerful than the low-grade fireworks that have been available in Michigan, but are less explosive than large pyrotechnic displays. This new law will make Michigan a friendlier place for small businesses as Michigan residents can buy consumer-grade fireworks within their home state instead of traveling outside of the state to purchase them, which will help promote local businesses and the local economy and even spur job creation.

Although fireworks are a fun way to celebrate the 4th of July, I urge local residents to remember to be careful this holiday, as fireworks can also be very dangerous if not handled properly. The State Fire Marshal reminds residents when lighting fireworks to always have water nearby, never re-light a dud and wait 15-20 minutes before putting it in a bucket of water, never throw or point fireworks at people, make sure the area is clear of combustibles, dispose of fireworks by soaking them in water before placing them in a trash can, and light one firework at a time to promote a safe and fun environment for lighting off fireworks.

For local residents who are looking for a place to see fireworks this 4th of July, there will be fireworks on July 4th at dusk at the Fowlerville Fairgrounds. No matter where you're spending your holiday, I wish you and your families a safe and happy 4th of July.
