UPDATED: New Split Merge Traffic System Aims to Minimize Construction Snarls

Singe-lane closure for U.S. 23 slated for this weekend.

A new traffic control device that allows two lanes of traffic in both directions during road work could be implemented as soon as this Sunday on U.S. 23 south of Silver Lake Road to just north of the Huron River bridge, MDOT announced Thursday.

The split merge traffic system would split northbound traffic to one lane on the northbound side and one on what's normally the southbound side, MDOT said in an email. When traffic is split, the northbound on-ramp at Silver Lake Road will be closed and a detour posted, the email said.

The work is part of larger two-year project to resurface U.S. 23 north of Silver Lake Road to I-96 and repair bridges along the route, according to MDOT. The system already has been used on several major freeway projects, including I-96 in Clinton and Eaton counties and I-75 in Monroe County in 2010.
