Report: Most Hartland Area Highway Bridges Stand in Solid Shape

Faussett Road over U.S. 23 rates in fair condition.

Most of the highway bridges in the Hartland area rate satisfactory or better while the 50-year-old Faussett Road bridge over U.S. 23 in Tyrone Township received a step lower with fair ratings, according to the state's latest report released Thursday.

MDOT spokeswoman Kari Arend said the fair ratings are nothing to be alarmed about.

"Five is a fairly good rating," Arend said, adding that while the bridge isn't slated for major work in the next five years, "We will still inspect the bridge on a regular basis and perform rountine maintenance as needed."

Fair means, according to National Bridge Inventory Rating Scale, that "all primary structural elements are sound but may have minor corrosion, cracking or chipping (and) may include minor erosion on bridge piers."

Two other bridges at U.S. 23 over Hyne Road in Brighton Township also received fair ratings on the three categories judged — deck, superstructure and substructure — but both just underwent repairs that were completed last month and have yet to be reinspected, according to the report.

MDOT releases updates on about 4,400 highway bridge inspections four times a year, according to a news release, rating them on a 0-9 scale. Bridges must be at least 20 feet and the report does not include locally owned, pedestrian or railway bridges, the release said.

Of those inspected, 378 were structurally deficient and 843 were functionally obsolete — both figures are lower than the previous report. Click here for the entire report.
