Summer Tax Bills in Hartland to Have New Wrinkle

The Livingston Educational Service Agency is shifting its levy from the winter.

Summer tax bills should be in the mail this week and Hartland Township Treasurer Kathie Horning said the amount will be higher than last summer — but it's a tax shift, not a tax increase.

"Your winter will be lower," she said.

Horning said the Livingston Educational Service Agency (LESA), which had levied about 2.3 mills in the winter, has decided to collect taxes in the summer, instead. Historically, such moves help tax-collecting entities with its finances, such as investments, budgeting and cash flow.

LESA is an intermediate school district that supports the county's five public school districts and two public school academies with services that include special education and alternative education programs and professional development.

Property taxes are collected twice a year and dollars are used to help fund LESA, Hartland Township and Livingston County government, the Hartland School District, the Hartland-Deerfield Fire Authority, the Huron-Clinton Metropark Authority, Livingston County EMS, Cromaine District Library and veterans relief.
