Board signs off on nearly $3.7M in contracts.

Several renovation projects for the Hartland School District slated for this summer are moving ahead.

They were among nearly $3.7 million in contracts awarded for site and interior renovations on many of buildings and properties using 2006 and 2010 bond money that was approved by the Hartland Board of Education last week.

The work ranges from complete mechanical renovations of both and schools to infrastructure work at those schools and , and elementaries. There are even new tennis courts at the old high school that are planned.

The package also included funds for projects that are already under way. They include installing another 288 interactive white boards in all buildings — and for the "51" building, which houses the , all new sinks, counter tops and sink bases have been installed in all classrooms. The building will also have a new air-handler unit installed that will put air conditioning in the school.

A big focus of the summer work is at Lakes and Farms, which share a property in Brighton Township off Taylor Road.

"We are replacing all of the heat pumps in both Lakes and Farms, the mechanical piping, the boilers, the circulation pumps, and we're putting in new roof top units," said Douglas Madden, senior project manager for Barton Malow Company of Southfield. "All things you won't really see, but that you will feel."

Included in the monies is $290,200 awarded to Nagle Paving Company of Novi from the 2006 bond that will be used to rehaul the parking lots there.

"We are going to remove the existing parking lot in front of Lakes and install a new, larger parking lot with a retention base and probably increase the parking three-fold that is there right now in front of the building," Madden said.

Plans are also in place to modify how cars enter and exit Farms. A secondary entrance will be added and concrete curbs will be built to create more traffic control. Car and bus traffic entrances will be completely separate and the size of the pick-up zone for students will be increased significantly.

Also this summer:

  • Creekside Elementary School will have some restoration work done in its parking lots and additional curbs installed.
  • The parking lot at Round Elementary School will be expanded and moved further into the south. Some grating will also be performed to allow better drainage from the south side of the building back out into the wetlands, Madden said.
  • The sidewalk at Village Elementary will be extended from to the school parking lot with a route near the portable classrooms.  Madden said this should help keep foot traffic out of the parking lot.
  • The front parking lot at will also be completely removed and resurfaced.
  • The upper four tennis courts at the will be replaced and the lower courts will be removed and four pickle ball courts will be installed in their place.  A storage building on the north side of the practice athletic field will also be replaced.
