JUNIOR FOOTBALL — Two Hartland junior football teams blanked Howell squads on Saturday.

Junior Varsity White football defeated Howell Silver 6-0 on Saturday at Howell Parker High School, according to an email from Patch User Jim Muscat, while Sheila Brodie Nicholas reported on Hartland Patch's Facebook page that Varsity Blue shut out Howell Gold 43-0 as well.

The teams (JV is fifth and sixth graders while varsity is seventh and eighth graders) are part of the Livingston County Area Junior Footbal League (LCAJFL). In Hartland, they are part of four divisions that each have squads at three age levels ranging from third to eighth grade in a football program run through the Hartland Area Youth Athletic Association (HAYAA).

RUNNING — At least a dozen runners from Hartland finished the 35th Crim 10-Mile Race in Flint on Saturday, according to results posted at Gault Race Management, including two cross country runners who were near the tops in their age groups.

Alex Gietek, 17, was second while 13-year-old Alex Lindahl finished sixth in their respective age groups.

Alex Gietek, who qualified for the cross country state finals last year, ran a 58:13. Only Justin Waraniak of Fenton was faster with a 57:20 in a group that had more than 200 runners.

With a 1:21:37, Alex Lindahl averaged just under 8:10 per mile and appears to be second fastest local finisher. There were 39 in the age group with Nathan Watson of Sterling Heights clocking the fastest time in 1:12:19.

Two other cross country runners — Jeremy Kramer and Tommy Anderson — finished the race along with boys high school coach Matt Gutteridge, who is from Fenton.

Among those with a Hartland mailing address, Matthew Turchi, 52, was the fastest listed with a 1:21:26. Jennifer Servais, 30, was the fastest among women's results, completing the race in 1:25:57.

Julius Kogo of Kenya won the race with a 47:15. Everlyn Lagat of Kenya finished first in the women's division in 55:15. About 9,500 people completed the race. For news coverage of the race, click here.

Participants from Hartland also competed in races of 1 mile and 5K — with cross country runner Noah Kramer, 13, finishing ninth and capturing his age group with a 19:19.

For results of runners who we know with a Hartland connection, mostly from a Hartland mailing, see below. Note, because Hartland is carved up among several different ZIP codes, there likely are more area finishers. Tuesday

GIRLS GOLF — Senior captain Brooke Kastamo led Hartland to a sixth-place finish during a two-day tournament that ended Tuesday in Traverse City.

Kastamo's rounds of 84-83 gave her a top 10 finish at the 30-team Traverse City Central Tournament that included 14 Division 1 squads.

"That was a pretty outstanding performance," said coach Mike Joseph.

Joseph said he also was encouraged how the Eagles improved over the two days from 385 ro 367 the second day for a 752 total.

"It's early in the year. We're going to have a lot of ups and downs," he said.

Grosse Pointe South won Division 1 with a combined two-day score of 680.

Other Hartland scores were: Rachel Byron (97-91), Claire Seekely (101-103), Maggie Hogan (104-109), Kelsey Erickson (102-96) and Annie Quinn (98-97).

The Eagles next tee it up 4 p.m. Thursday against Howell in a 9-hole match at Chemung Hills in Oceola Township.

BOYS SOCCER — Hartland fell behind 2-0 early to Flushing in the season opener Tuesday and couldn't make up the deficit despite "peppering the goal" in the second half, said head coach Andrew Kartsounes.

The final score was 2-1.

"The second half we carried play," he said. "They did everything but score."

Flushing started off strong with two goals — one on a corner kick and another on a free kick, Kartsounes said, showing that defense for set plays is something the Eagles will have to work on. He said he hopes the team can build on its strong play later in the game.

"These early games have to be learning experiences," he said.

Hartland's lone goal was from a header in the first half by Kyle Seychel, his first as a varsity player. It was assisted by senior Torin MacGregor.

Junior varisty won its game 5-0. The Eagles next play 4 p.m. (JV) and 5:30 p.m. (varisty) Thursday at Ann Arbor Skyline.

Monday

BOYS TENNIS — The Eagles started the season with a win Monday over a tough defending Lakes North division champion Lakeville 6-3 at home.

Hartland coach Judy Jagdfeld said the team's depth — considered a strength going into the season — was the difference as the Eagles won two matches in singles and four out of five in doubles.

"We're just so excited about the win," Jagdfeld said. "We knew it was going to be a tight match."

She added the victory will give the team confidence in the early season as it prepares for the Kensington Lakes Activities Association Lakes West division play with non-divisional matches this week at Walled Lake Northern on Wednesday and Holly on Thursday.

The first division match-up is Thursday, Sept. 1, at Grand Blanc.
