Possible Seventh Hour being Discussed for Hartland High School

Hartland High School principal Ben Mainka notified parents that in negotiations between the Board of Education and the teachers association, one of the things discussed was a 7-period school day at the high school.

During the State of the School address in February, Hartland High School principal Ben Mainka spoke to the audience about the possibility of adding a seventh hour to the school day.

During his address, Mainka said that the seventh hour day was also being considered in other districts such as Howell and Brighton, but explained to the audience that it would not mean a longer school day.

“What it means is that the class period would be reduced in time,” he said. “It opens up with more flexibility in the schedule, more opportunities."

In a letter sent to Hartland High School parents on March 18, Mainka announced that there were negotiations between the Board of Education and the teachers association (HEA) and the 7-period school day was one of the issues being discussed.

“We are hopeful the 7-period day will come to fruition because of the increased opportunities and choices our students will have,” Mainka wrote in the letter.

The letter also included three key points about the possible change including no change to length of school day, individual class sizes will be reduced and more opportunity for students.

The Hartland Consolidated School Board of Education will be voting on teacher contracts during the school board meeting on Monday. The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Hartland Educational Support Service Center.

Mainka has also scheduled a meeting for parents looking for more information about the seventh hour addition on Monday at 5:30 p.m. at Hartland High School.
