Area Travel Lacrosse Club Excels at Weekend Tournament

U15 wins first while U13 takes second in their respective divisions.

The U15 team of an area travel lacrosse club — the Shamrocks — won its division championship while the U13 team finished in second place at the Great Lakes Lacrosse Invitational in Kalamazoo this past weekend.

The U15 team, which is comprised mostly of players from the Hartland and Howell areas, defeated a Lansing area team, a team from Macomb and two teams from Illinois.

"Playing multi-state competition and coming out on top is a satisfying accomplishment," said Rick Mularoni, the U15 coach who grew up in Hartland.

The U13 team, which has players all from Hartland's youth lacrosse league, won three matches — including wins over teams from Illinois and Indiana — before losing in the championship 8-6 to the Ann Arbor Blue Jays.

U13 coach Greg Light said he's proud of the team, especially because other squads drew players from larger areas.

"We put a team together with our Hartland boys and we are competing at a very high level of lacrosse," Light said. "This is very promising for the future of Hartland lacrosse. Our intent is to grow the summer tournament teams to include more age groups and the girls as well."

Both teams now are preparing to compete in Traverse City from July 29-31 at the Cherry Bomb Tournament, considered one of the largest tournaments in the Midwest.
