Area Runners Finish Brooksie Way Half Marathon

RUNNING — At least two Hartland area runners completed Sunday's Brooksie Way Half Marathon in Rochester Hills.

Jennifer Servais, 30, finished in 1:52:28 while Jennifer Fettig-Doorlag, 37, clocked a 2:11:58 were the only runners listed from the Hartland ZIP code. For additional runners, see below.

More than 4,200 runners participated in the event that was won by Pontiac's Shane Logan in 1:11:59. Sarah Gryniewicz of Grosse Pointe Woods was the top female finisher in 1:23:38.

Note, because Hartland is carved up among several different ZIP codes, there likely are more area finishers. If you'd like to be included, please email christofer.machniak@patch.com and you'll be added here.

Brooksie Way Half Marathon

Saturday

CROSS COUNTRY — The boys team won the Midland Invitational on Saturday while the girls finished second as Eagle top runners — Ian McGinn and Avery Evenson — won races.

McGinn ran a 16:06 as Hartland finished ahead of eight opponents with 31 points while Evenson's 18:26 helped the Eagles to a score of 69, second only to Midland Dow's 44, according to head coaches Matt Gutteridge and Mary Rinkus.

Other Hartland boys varsity finishers were: Sean Pengelly (sixth, 16:30), Alex Gietek (seventh, 16:36), Jareb Duggan (12th, 17:00), Brendan Gavitt (26th, 17:28), Grant Hamilton (29th, 17:50), and Patrick Gavitt (29th, 17:50).

In addition to Evenson, other girls varsity finishers were: Natalie Halonen (sixth, 19:53), Megan Skinner (16th, 20:58), Allison McGinn (22nd, 21:16), Taylor Pryde (24th, 21:20),  Anna Hense (27th, 21:34), and Denise Grezeszak (32nd, 21:47).

The junior varsity girls also won its competition with a score of 17, taking places 1, 2, 3, 5 and six, ahead of second place Alpena's 65.

"The team had a good day overall with six girls running personal records and seven running season best times," Rinkus said.

Hartland next runs Tuesday at Grand Blanc.

Friday

FOOTBALL — Hartland lost 20-9 to Brighton in the homecoming game Friday, according to a Hartland Patch .

EQUESTRIAN — The team will compete against rival Milford over the weekend in regionals, according to .

Thursday

GIRLS SWIMMING — Hartland defeated Pinckney on senior night Thursday 127-56, winning 11 of 12 events, said head coach Maria Puranen.

"The team performed well," she said in an email to Hartland Patch. "We have some big tests coming up vs. Grand Blanc, Milford and Howell."

Here are some highlights, according to the coach:

• Senior Erica Mehlberg was lead off on 400-yard free relay and they broke the pool record with a time of 3:47.47.
• Amanda Thielen's 2:26 in individual medley had 2 second time drop.
• Sara Condra's 1:15 on her 100 breaststroke was a personal best.
• Carolyn Robinson continues to knock on the door in state cuts for the 50 and 100 free.
• Lindsey Pajot’s backstroke time is now down to 1:04 and dropping.

With the win, the Eagles are now 4-1 in dual meets and next is in the pool Oct. 6 at Grand Blanc.

GIRLS GOLF — Hartland finished fifth out of 13 teams at a tournament in Livonia on Thursday.

The Eagles scored 390 while South Lyon won the competition with a 369, said head coach Mike Joseph. Leading Hartland was senior captain Brooke Kastamo who shot an 87 to finish fifth among individuals.

"The course was very wet," Joseph said. "It was a good tune up for the conference tournament on Monday."

That competition starts 10 a.m. Monday at Lakelands Golf & Country Club in Pinckney. Regionals are 8:30 a.m. Thursday at Prestwick Village Golf Club in Highland where the top 3 teams and top three individuals not on those teams advance to the state finals.

Joseph said he thinks the team could qualify if everyone does their best. The Eagles went 4-6 in dual meets against strong opponents but only narrowly lost several matches.

"We do have a shot," he said.

Wednesday

GIRLS GOLF — Hartland lost 194-197 in a tight match against Milford on Wednesday at .

Leading the Eagles was senior captain Brooke Kastamo who shot a 44. With the loss, Hartland ended its dual meet season with a record of 4-6.

Next up is a series of tournaments, including for the Kensington Lakes Activities Association and regionals next week.

Tuesday

BOYS AND GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY — Both teams outpaced Howell during the Eagles first home dual meet Tuesday.

Girls head coach Mary Rinkus said her squad's move to run in small groups was a big factor in the 21-38 win. She hopes adopting the strategy proves to be a turning point as her runners have been reluctant to adopt keying off each other over the past several seasons.

"They bought into it," she said. "It was great to see them finish in the top three spots."

Avery Evenson won the race in 19:59 with Natalie Halonen finishing in second in 20:54 and Megan Skinner in third at 20:54. The next four all finished within seven seconds of each other with Allsion McGinn in fourth at 21:37, Anna Hense in eighth at 21:43, Taylor Pryde in ninth at 21:44 and Denise Grezeszak in 10th at 21:45.

The boys team also was dominant in a 15-48 win over the Highlanders as the Eagles took the top five places.

"It's always nice to get a win," said head coach Matt Gutteridge.

Leading Hartland was Ian McGinn who won the race with a 16:06. Other Eagle times were: Sean Pengelly (second, 16:15), Jareb Duggan (third, 16:50), Brendan Gavitt (fourth, 16:56), Patrick Gavitt (fifth, 17:11), Grant Hamilton (eighth, 17:28) and Jessie Neal (ninth, 17:42).

Patrick Gavitt set a personal record with his time, Gutteridge noted.

"Patrick Gavitt had a fantastic day," he said.

Both teams are now 1-2 in dual meets and next run Saturday at an invitational in Midland.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL — Hartland swept Pinckney on Tuesday 25-14, 25-16 and 25-18.

Head coach Nicole Conely said the Eagles played within their system well but still got off to a slow start — a tendency she's been working all season long for the team to overcome. Tuesday's win did mark progress, she added.

"I am happy with winning," she said. "I'm seeing small subtleties in the game worked to perfection."

Conely said Sam Dilbert and Sam Jackson served well, each committing no errors while Dilbert had two aces and Jackson had three. Lynsie Giroux also shined with 13 successful attacks that included eight kills while Jaymie Dyer had 17 assists.

With the win, Hartand improves to 2-4 in the Kensingston Valley Athletic Association's West Division and 9-11-1 overall. The Eagles next play Saturday in the KLAA challenge at Northville.

BOYS SOCCER — Hartland lost 3-2 to Pinckney on Tuesday, according to an article in the Press & Argus.

The Pirates broke a 2-2 tie with about six minutes to play on a penalty kick, the article said.

Hartland's Bryan Condra scored both of the Eagles goals while goalkeeper Kevin Forster made 17 saves, it said.

The Ealges next play 7 p.m. Thursday at Brighton.

Monday

HARTLAND HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS — Touchdowns and an unbeaten week helped propel the football team's quarterback and the No. 1 singles player on the tennis team to athlete of the week honors.

Junior quarterback Stephen Milarch scored three TDs on 311 combined yards of throwing and passing in Hartland's come from behind 25-17 win against Pinckney on Friday.

Milarch, a co-captain, was 10 for 18 in the air while he carried the ball 18 times for 146 yards.

In Tennis, top singles player Grant Comly was undefeated in five matches while winning first place in an eight-team tournament held in Howell.

Comly's record this year is 11-3 and he is undefeated in Livingston County.

Fenton State Bank sponsors the high school's athlete of the week program.

BOYS TENNIS — Hartland won eight of nine flights to win Howell's Play for the Cure tournament Saturday, according to an article in the Livingston County Press & Argus.

Winning were: Grant Comly, Ben Johnson and Corey Lewandowski in singles and Cameron Sloan and Derek Andreen, Andy Cabush and Adam DeRubeis, Dennis Gess and Nathan Retich, Maverick Tessler and Steve Knudson and Kyle Classen and Michael Holden in doubles.

The event raised $4,000 for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis research, the article said.

YOUTH SOFTBALL — The Hartland-based Eagles Fastpich Softball 10U Gold Team that was played Saturday and Sunday in Grand Blanc.
