AUBURN HILLS — Hartland senior John Julien (152 pounds) defeated Korey Knapp of Grand Ledge, 6-1, to finish the MHSAA Division 1 state wrestling tournament in third place.

“This feels good. I didn’t get first but third is good,” Julien said. “This may be the last match I ever wrestle, I’m happy to go out like this. … I knew if I kept pushing the pace I would come out on top.”

Despite wrestling for rival schools, Tkac hadn’t wrestled Charneski all season until the MHSAA state tournament. Tkac defeated him twice, the second time, 9-4, en route to a fifth-place finish.

“My goal was to make it to the finals or upset as many people as I could,” Tkac said.

Tkac, a senior, took an early 5-0 lead after taking a shot with :18 seconds left in the first period. He got the two for the takedown then got three near-fall points to close out the period. Tkac was unable to get off the bottom in the second and Charneski chose neutral to start the third period.

Charneski  came out firing in the final period, shooting on Tkac’s legs just nine seconds in. Charneski completed the takedown 20 seconds later to cut the lead to two, however Tkac escaped just nine seconds later.
