"Dynamic" Goalie Signs Letter of Intent

Hartland senior Tabitha Ferguson signs her letter of intent for lacrosse at Siena Heights University.

Tabitha Ferguson, one of the key players in the girls lacrosse team, signed her letter of intent Monday morning with Siena Heights University in Adrian, MI.

Ferguson says she has plans to study education, possibly related to the art therapy field, in college.

The team goalie, Ferguson has been referred to as a “wall” in the net for her team and says she isn’t afraid of getting in front of the hard shots thrown at her during games.

The 2013 senior does admit, however, to having her bare arms cramp up and take the beating during games by the solid ball that she defends against.

“It makes it so when you get hit, you can’t move your arms any more,” she said. “My arms go stiff."

Siena Heights head coach, Cindy Hill, says that Ferguson’s fearless attitude is what is needed for her position.

“Mental toughness- that’s definitely number one,” Cindy Hill said. “And number two, obviously, is coordination – being able to get out of the goal and intercept passes.”

Hill says she has been watching Ferguson for two years and says the young player has both of those requirements and is an “awesome” goalie.

"We're really excited to have her," she said.

Ferguson’s first lacrosse coach in Hartland, Aaron Skomial, says he saw her potential in the goal early on and agrees with Hill saying Ferguson has added a “dynamic option to the defense” for the team since joining the sport several years ago.

“She has been so valuable to the team over the years. Her play has been the difference in our ability to win games,” Skomial said in an email to Hartland Patch. “She is so athletic that she will come out of goal and challenge an opposing player charging to goal.”

According to Skomial, Ferguson has a winning percentage of 80 percent for her high school record so far, going 41-10.

“She will be such an asset for Sienna Heights in the future, but Hartland still has her for one more year, and the goal is to win a state championship,” Skomial said. “Tabitha gives us that chance.”
