Four Top Eight Finishers For Hartland Wrestling Program

AUBURN HILLS – The young Hartland wrestling team gained some valuable experience over the weekend at the MHSAA individual state wrestling finals.

Five of the Eagles 10 qualifiers that wrestled at The Palace of Auburn Hills are underclassmen. Two of them achieved all-state status.

Sophomore Austin Eicher had the team’s top performance.

Eicher reached the 119 pound championship round finals, but lost on a 3-1 decision to Davison sophomore Justin Oliver. Eicher earned a chance at a state title by beating Brighton junior Jordan Amine in the semifinals Friday night on a 7-2 decision.

Freshman teammate Jacob Gorial was the other underclassman to reach all-state status. Gorial  His win over Detroit Catholic Central’s Myles Amine ensured a top eight finish.

Two seniors also were named all-state -  Matt Ostermiller (189) and and Justin Charneski (171).

It was strong finish for a team that lost six of its 10 matches on the first round of the tournment.

"We had a couple of matches (Thursday) that we could of won," Hartland coach Todd Cheney said. "We had kind of a roller coaster kind of day. We just fell short in a couple."

Cheney said the venue played a part.

"A lot of our kids are here for the first time and The Palace can be kind of an intimidating place," he said.
