Hartland Boys Cross Country Wins KLAA Tournament, Girls Finish Fifth as Evenson Wins Race

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY — The Hartland boys cross country team raced past the competition on Thursday, winning the KLAA conference title with a score of 65, according to coach Matt Gutteridge. Milford came in second with a score of 75.

Top finishers for Hartland include Ian McGinn (fifth, 16:04), Sean Pengelly (seventh, 16:14), Alex Gietek (ninth, 16:20), Jareb Duggan (21st,16:41) Brendan Gavitt (23rd,16:47), Pat Gavitt (36th, 17:04) and Grant Hamilton (43rd, 17:24).

The win is the fourth multi-team meet this season the boys have won. The Eagles next look to qualify for the state finals during regionals Friday, Oct. 28, at Huron Meadows Metropark.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY — The Hartland girls cross country team finished fifth out of 12 teams in the KLAA conference meet on Thursday with a score of 133 as junior Avery Evenson finished first overall, according to coach Mary Rinkus.  

"Avery ran a very smart race, pacing with Julia Valencia (Walled Lake Western) through the second mile," Rinkus wrote in an email to Patch. "She turned it up in the final leg of the race and won by 31 seconds (final time — 18:23)."

The rainy and windy conditions yesterday were not easy to run in, according to Rinkus, but she is happy with the results from her team.

"Overall, we had a good day today," Rinkus wrote. "Which bodes well for our regional meet on Friday, Oct. 28."

The next Eagle finishers were: Natalie Halonen (18th, 19:59), Taylor Pryde (35th, 21:00), Megan Skinner (37th, 21:03), Tori Graves (42nd, 21:12), Donna Kert (48th, 21:30), Allison McGinn (51st, 21:34).

GIRLS SWIMMING — Hartland defeated Howell on Thursday to go undefeated and win its division, according to @hartlandsports.

Tuesday

BOYS SOCCER — Hartland falls short in its playoff game against Pinckney with a loss of 0-1, according to @hartlandsports.

The loss ends the season for the Eagles, who struggled with a 4-11-3 record.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL — Hartland lost to Walled Lake Western in four games (15-25, 22-25, 25-15, 17-25), according to head coach Nicole Conely.

Standout performances for the Eagles included setter Hadley Knudsen who had no service errors and 22 assists and middle Katrin Otis also didn't miss a serve. In addition, outside hitters Cassidy Porta and Lynsie Giroux both registered 10 kills while both only committed three hitting errors, Conley said.

With the loss, Hartland drops to 8-21-3 on the season and and the Eagles next play 9 a.m. Saturday at Waterford Mott in the KLAA tournament.

Sunday

RUNNING — At least three Hartland area residents completed the Detroit Marathon on Sunday.

Chris Costa, 41, clocked a 3:25:41, according to results on Gault Race Management's website. Patrick Morris, 23, ran a 3:48:54 and Matthew Turchi, 52, finished in 4:12:36.

There were more than 3,400 finishers in the race, results show. Derek Nakluski won the race in 2:28:22. Wioletta Kryza was the first female in 2:44:09.
