Hartland Graduate Qualifies for Michigan Junior Amateur State Championship

Recent Hartland High School graduate Craig Stoddard shot a 71 this week to qualify for the Michigan Junior State Amateur Championship early next month.

The score was a career best, according to a tweet Saturday on the Hartland Golf twitter account that's maintained by varsity coach Nathan Oake.

"Nice work," said the tweet.

Stoddard finished in a tie for third Wednesday at the qualifier with two other golfers at in Green Oak Township. Joe Hooks of Detroit and Timothy Pearce of Birmingham both carded 70 to be co-medalists, according to the results.

The qualifer was the last of six held this summer. The top 16 scores out of 70 qualifed for the finals, which will be held Aug. 8-11 at the Medalist Golf Club in Marshall.

Stoddard isn't the only Hartland grad doing well this summer. Ben Gawronski, who attends Oakland Community College, qualified to compete in the Golf Association of Michigan Championship on Aug. 15-16 at Barton Hills Country Club in Ann Arbor. He shot a 75 to tie for 11th on July 5 at Plum Howell Country Club to enter the field.
