Hartland Hockey Wins Semis in Overtime, Heads to First State Championship

Hartland High School will play in its first Division 2 championship game on Saturday.

It was an exciting finish for Hartland's hockey team Thursday as they won the Division 2 semifinals in overtime.

The Eagles beat Port Huron Northern with a final score of 3-2 at Compuware Arena in Plymouth.

According to MLive.com, Hartland forward Josh Ruthig had the game winning goal with 2:16 left in overtime.

"The team just wanted to get this done," Ruthig told MLive. "We just couldn't give up. Coach said, 'will over skill' and that's what we had to do."

Hartland now heads to its first championship game on Saturday, where the team will play Livonia Stevenson for the title. The game is scheduled for 10 a.m. at Compuware.

"Hartland has never been to a state championship game. I'm proud of them. It's an experience they'll have the rest of their lives," Hartland Rick Gadwa told MLive.

Stevenson is coming off its 10-2 win over Saginaw Heritage in the semis.
