Hartland Men's Lacrosse Looking to Overcome Rough Start

Despite its 1-3 record, the men's lacrosse team is ready to compete for KLAA title.

It may have gotten off to a rocky start with a 1-3 record so far this year, but Hartland Varsity Men’s Lacrosse Coach Mike Holka says that his team is focused on accomplishing its goal of competing for the KLAA championship title.

“We had a rough start with 1 and 3, but we haven’t played any teams in our conference yet, so its all 0-0,” he said.

Only seven seniors and nine returning varsity players make up his 25-man roster but Holka says that the young team is learning new skills during practices and showing improvement.

“The guys are doing very well,” Holka said. “We’re throwing a lot of new information at them this season and they’re picking it up very well. Getting them to execute inside of a game is a little different than just running it through practice.”

Working hard and executing during practice is how senior captain Brad Maschke says his team will be able to accomplish those season goals.

“You can always get better at everything you do in this sport, so it's just practice, practice, practice,” Manske said. “You can’t come out here and go half-hearted and then expect to pull out a big win.”

A close group of friends on and off the field, according to senior captain Rocky Crotty, the team is looking to move past its early season losses and come out stronger in the next part of their season.

Using the word “intensity” to describe his teammates, junior captain Andrew Skowyra says the team is looking forward to winning more games.

With its biggest rival and competition coming up against , the team captains say they are ready and looking for a big win this year.

“That’s one we want real bad,” Crotty said. “We haven’t beaten them in awhile.”
