At Least a Trio From Hartland Finish Detroit Marathon

RUNNING — At least three Hartland area residents completed the Detroit Marathon on Sunday.

Chris Costa, 41, clocked a 3:25:41, according to results on Gault Race Management's website. Patrick Morris, 23, ran a 3:48:54 and Matthew Turchi, 52, finished in 4:12:36.

There were more than 3,400 finishers in the race, results show. Derek Nakluski won the race in 2:28:22. Wioletta Kryza was the first female in 2:44:09.

Friday

FOOTBALL — Hartland won 34-14 over Waterford Kettering on Friday night, according to @hartlandsports.

Travis Spears rushed for 165 yards and a third quarter interception and touchdown by Anthony Martino helped the visiting Eagles seize control of the game, according to an article in the Livingston County Daily Press & Argus.

With the win, the Eagles improve to 3-5 on the season. Hartland's final game is 7 p.m. Friday against Ypsilanti Lincoln at .

Thursday

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL — Hartland played well and were in every game but lost in straight sets to Brighton on Thursday at home, according to head coach Nicole Conely.

"It was very competitive and well played game by both teams," she said.

The scores were 24-26, 20-25, 24-26.

Outstanding performers on the Eagles included: Hannah Guilford who returned 20 of 23 and scored 10 kills, Brianna Bove (13 for 19 with four kills), Katrin Otis (10 blocks), Jaymie Dyer (26 assists) and Sam Jackson (eight digs).

Hartland, (2-8 in the KLAA West and 8-20-3), plays its final regular season match 7 p.m. Tuesday at Walled Lake Western.

Tuesday

CROSS COUNTRY — The boys and girls team defeated rival Pinckney on Tuesday during senior night at Hartland High School's home course.

The girls won 27-28 led by junior Avery Evenson's 19:19 who came in first overall.

The next Eagle finishers were: Natalie Halonen (fourth, 20:23), Anna Hense (sixth, 21:06), Megan Skinner (seventh, 21:11), Taylor Pryde (ninth, 21:16) Allison McGinn (13th, 21:52) and Tori Graves (14th, 22:06).

"(We) ran a smart race," said head coach Mary Rinkus in an email to Hartland Patch. "Avery and Natalie did a great job up front. After the first four finishers, both teams were tied. So the race came down to our third, fourth and fifth runners who packed together nicely through the finish."

In the boys race, Hartland won 21-35 to defeat the usually state title-contending Pirates for the first time in head coach Matt Gutteridge's eight years leading the Eagles.

"It was senior night — a great way to send the boys out," he said.

Hartland's Ian McGinn won the race in 16:00, followed by Sean Pengelly's 16:08 who grabbed second. Other Hartland finishers were: Alex Gietek (fifth, 16:29), Jareb Duggan (sixth, 16:50), Brendan Gavitt (seventh, 16:51), Patrick Gavitt (10th, 17:23) and Grant Hamilton (13th, 17:32).

With the win, the girls finish the year with a 3-2 dual meet record while the boys were 2-3 to end the regular season. Both squads will now prepare for the Oct. 20 conference meet.

"We're back to work tomorrow," Gutteridge said.

Monday

HARTLAND HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS — "We don't lose."

With the score tied 78-78, those comments from junior Carolyn Robinson "fired up" the Hartland Swim & Dive team to help best Grand Blanc 99-87 on Thursday, said head coach Maria Puranen.

Robinson also was walking the talk at that meet winning the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle events and helping 200-yard and 400-yard relay teams to victory.

Her performance earned Robinson athlete of the week honors Monday. Puranen also noted her academic achievements with a grade point average above 3.75 while taking many advanced placement classes.

The win gives Hartland a 5-1 dual meet record and keeps the Eagles undefeated atop of their division — a crown Hartland has yet to win. The Eagles next meet is Thursday at Milford.

HARTLAND HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS — Senior Alex Gietek was faster than more than 230 runners with his 16:32 — a key time that helped Hartland win the Portage Invitational on Saturday and won him athlete of the week honors.

Fenton State Bank sponsors the high school's athlete of the week program.

BOYS SOCCER — Hartland netted a 4-2 win Monday against Waterford Kettering.

Scoring goals for the Eagles were Brian Condra, Kyle Elly, Torin MacGregor and Zach Henning, according to an article in the Livingston County Daily Press & Argus. Goal keeper Kevin Forster made six saves.

With the win, Hartland improved to 3-10-3 on the year. The Eagles next host South Lyon 7 p.m. Wednesday.

From over the weekend

RUNNING — At least two Hartland area runners finished Sunday's Chicago Marathon.

Leo Foley of Deerfield Township clocked a 2:57:15 to come in 559th overall. The 30-year-old who made at the end of the Brooksie Way Half Marathon in Rochester Hills was 118th in his age group.

Shari Sixbery of Hartland finished in 5:10:20.

Moses Mosop of Kenya won the race in 2:05:37 and Liliya Shobukhova was the first female in 2:18:20. There were more than 35,000 participants in the 34th running of the race.
