Weekend Tournaments: Wrestling Wins, Girls Bowling Notches a Third, Competitive Cheer Finishes Seventh

WRESTLING — Hartland won the annual tournament it hosts Saturday, according to results posted at hartlandwrestling.com.

The Eagles scored 398 points with New Lothrup coming in second at 327 points and Lake Fenton finishing third at 162. Eight teams, including a Hartland B team, competed.

Taking firsts were Eric Lundwall (103), Nate Hughes (112), Austin Eicher (125), Anthony Colaianne (140), Mitchel Thomas (160) and Phil Rowland (285), according to the website.

Hartland next competes Dec. 17 in the Holland team tournament.

BOYS AND GIRLS BOWLING — The Hartland girls team finished third Saturday in the Traverse City Titan Varsity Bowling Tournament, according to coach Ron Heck.

Both Rachel Brewer, who was third, and Sarah Schmitz, who was sixth, earned medals.

The boys team qualified in the top eight but narrowly missed the finals cut, Heck said, with Josh Blanchard leading Hartland's scorers in singles with 435.

COMPETITIVE CHEER — Hartland opened the year finishing seventh Saturday at the Competitive Cheer Coaches of Michigan Invitational at Stoney Creek High School, according to the Michigan High School Competitive Cheer website.

The Eagles had 778.4744 pointes. Rochester Adams won with about 800 points.

Hartland next competes 6 p.m. Wednesday at Lakeland during a crossover quad meet.

Thursday

HOCKEY — Hartland skated to a 5-5 tie against Pinckney on Thursday, according to the Kensington Lakes Activities Association.

The Livingston County Daily Press & Argus wrote a story about the game and published a photo gallery.

The Eagles, 2-1-1 overall and 1-1-1 in conference, next play 5 p.m. Friday at Clarkston.

GIRLS BASKETBALL — Hartland won 31-21 over Davison at home, according to the KLAA.

"I thought the defense for both teams was pretty good," head coach Don Palmer said in an article in the Press & Argus. "I also thought the shooting for both teams was pretty bad. It wasn't one of those slow-down games, it was just kind of ugly.

"But we'll take the win and run away. Run far, far away."

The Eagles, now 2-0, next play 7 p.m Tuesday at Lakeland.

Wednesday

WRESTLING — Hartland won its opening matches of the season with victories over Rochester 39-31 and Greenville 37-25 at a quad meet in Brighton, according to Michigan Grappler.

"That's what we're going to have to count on a lot because we're young in the middle," head coach Todd Cheney told the Livingston County Daily Press & Argus in an article. "We're going to have to count on our big guys to score points and our guys down low to score points."

ARCHERY — Emily Bee, who won the , was honored by the state Department of Natural Commission recently with a plaque and letter from Gov. Rick Snyder, a news release announced this week.

Both were presented by Rodney Stokes, director of the Department of Natural Resources, during the commission's Nov. 10 meeting, the release said. Bee, a Hartland high school sophomore, awards for winning included more than $4,000 in scholarships, two new bows and a target, the release said.

In addition, Hartland's team was fourth overall.

"The Hartland archery program is an excellent representation of the Department of Natural Resources' Archery in the Schools Program," said Mary Emmons, DNR Archery Education coordinator, in the release.

"Under Hartland Coach Rob Jellison's direction, the school's archery team has acquired seven state championships, two top five finishes at worlds, one national champion and one world record since the program started in 2007."

Tuesday

BOYS AND GIRLS BOWLING — Varsity girls and JV boys won in the season opener at Novi, according to coach Ron Heck.

Sarah Schmitz led the girls team with a 224, Heck said.

While boys varsity lost, Josh Blanchard had the first nine strikes en route to a 264. He also rolled a 222, he said.

Monday

BOYS BASKETBALL — Hartland opened the year with a 62-44 loss to Dexter on the road Monday, according to head coach Frank Leppek.

"We've got a very, very young team and we're going to take our lumps at times this year," Leppek said. "Our inexperience kind of showed."

But Leppek if the team works hard, he expects to see progress this season.

Junior guard Stephen Milarch led the Eagles with 10 points. Junior guard Grant Klopfenstein scored eight while somphore Tyler Leighton and Dylan Videto both had six apiece.

Hartland next plays Dec. 13 at Adrian. A Friday game at home against Walled Lake Western has been postponed until Jan. 24, delaying the Eagles first home game until Jan. 6 against Howell.

The time away from home should benefit the team gain more experience while not facing the pressures of playing in front of friends, family and faculty, Leppek said.

ALUMNI NEWS — Hope College junior Meredith Kussmaul of Hartland was named Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association women's basketball player of the week, according mLive.com.

The center and Hartland High School graduate, who won the award for the first time, scored 34 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in the school's opening two wins, including a career-high 24 vs. Albion.

Saturday, Dec. 3

SWIMMING — Hartland finished second in the Fenton relays Saturday as Ann Arbor Skyline took first with 385 points, breaking the at the event.

Hartland's 340 points kept them ahead of rival Howell, which finished in third with 308 points.

Hartland won one event — the 200-yard breaststroke relay — during a competition that coach Adam Wohl said was "a very competitive meet." Sven Stroven, James Hansen, Zach Vitta and James Strandbergh made up the first-place relay team.

The Eagles also had four seconds in the 400-yard medley relay, 400-yard individual medley relay, 400-yard freestyle relay, 200-yard butterfly relay.

"It was a strong team effort through and through," Wohl said in an article published by the Livingston County Daily Press & Argus. "and I was really happy with what I saw out of our younger guys."

CROSS COUNTRY — Hartland High School junior Avery Evenson finished 65th at the Nike Cross Nationals on Saturday with a 18:57, according to online results.

Sarah Baxter of a cross country club from Simi Valley, CA, won the race in 17:38, in Portland, OR. There were 196 who finished the race.

"I am happy with just getting (there) and the experience of it was really cool," Evenson told the Press & Argus for a story, adding she hopes to be in the top 21 next year. "The whole weekend was amazing."

The Press & Argus also picked Evenson as its female cross country runner of the year Monday.

HOCKEY — Hartland won 3-1 Saturday over Lakeland to improve its record to 1-1-0 in the conference and 2-1-0 overall, according the KLAA website.

The Eagles host Pinckney 7 p.m. Thursday at the .

GIRLS BASKETBALL — Hartland won its season opener 61-41 over Fenton on Friday.
