Hartland Insurance employees help on projects throughout Livingston County.

As the sun broke out Wednesday morning, the sounds of camaraderie, raking, tree trimming and weed pulling filled the air in parking lot of the Livingston County United Way in Genoa Township.

“We’re in fellowship mode today,” said Barbara Walker, vice president of Hartland Insurance, which had employees at locations around the area.

The morning shift of the 10th annual United Way Day of Caring had officially begun. The event, which takes place once a year, is a one-day intensive volunteer effort to help those in need throughout the county, from home repair projects to building handicap ramps. This year, there about were 75 projects done across the county.

“All-in-all, there are about 900 volunteer shifts being filled today,” said Jeanne Clum of the United Way. “There’s a lot going on.”

Ashlee Judd of Citizens Insurance arrived ready to tackle the morning project of putting together campaign materials and brochures with her co-workers for distribution.

“This is completely different then what I did before — last year I worked in someone’s yard,” she said.

Outside, some Hartland Insurance employees performed yard work, helping to straighten up the landscaping at the United Way building.

“This is what it’s about – community and giving back to the community and I’ll tell you what, we love it," Walker said. "I think this is the best thing they ever decided to have. We give to a lot of organizations but this is where you can actually physically get out and do the work — it’s fun.”

During the afternoon shift, Hartland resident Dan Taylor was happy to see his deck being renovated by the Hartland Insurance staff.

“I’m really glad you guys came,” he said. “I really appreciate it.”

As the day came to a close, JoAnn Lauzon of Hartland Insurance was satisfied with her role as a volunteer.

“It felt good to be outside – It’s fun to help the community and do something different,” she said.
