Clyde Rd dust survivor June 13, 2013 at 10:52 pm
I live very close to where this soul was lost. Heard the crash and saw the rescue and police effort…Read More (by great neighbors too). The county and township responded with a new "stop ahead" sign which is now partially blocked by trees when not dust covered. I don't know if a lit intersection or a blinking light would have slowed down this drunk driver but most accidents at this intersection have not involved drunk drivers but young drivers or weather related. They have been people approaching this poorly marked intersection as they are driving downhill on a dark and washboard dirt road. Hartland leadership needs to get Clyde rd paved from US-23 to Oakland county especially as Hartland Township is developing real estate on both Clyde and Fenton Rd . They need to put out the traffic volume test boxes and realize that this is a very busy road for truck and commuter traffic. Its not in the village or M59 so we tend to get hind t _ _.

Also forgot to mention that this is the "drunk and illegal activity corridor". If you are…Read More cutting across Oakland county to US23 or the opposite, they take Clyde rd to avoid M59 police risk. We have no local police so very little chance of getting busted on Clyde versus M59. State and Sheriff don't spend much time on Clyde. Explains the higher amount of break-ins that have occurred out here in recent years.

He is NOT, nor was he EVER a Detroit Lion. He attended one training camp. Never once played for the…Read More Lions. Please stop trying to fill space in the Patch.

Thanks for the follow-up!
Had a question though: It says the vehicle stopped was in the east bound…Read More lane waiting to turn left. BUT a field, not the sub, would be to the left in the east bound lane. Was the vehicle actually facing west bound, waiting to turn into the sub? Or, am I not understanding this?

Hi Hartland Dad-
Good question and unfortunately the only details I have are from the police report…Read More that states the car "was stopped in the east bound lane of M-59 waiting to make a left turn."
Hartland Dad May 2, 2013 at 12:46 am
Thanks for answering my question. I wondered if that's what the report said. Either the report is…Read More wrong, or maybe the driver was trying to do something out of the ordinary by turning left in that area. (For a U-turn, perhaps). Either way, as it is, it is heart-stopping to slow and eventually stop while turning off from M-59 and that's plenty of reason for change hopefully sooner than later.

Hartland Dad, Target came after we bought.... Now getting in our skinny left turn lane makes me…Read More anxious as cars move into the same lane heading to Target MUCH to early. Not fair to say "we knew" times change things.
Barry Tackett April 30, 2013 at 03:56 pm
Yes "Hartland Mom" things change. But M-59 has been a state highway for far longer than…Read More any of us care to remember.
The "5 Year" plan for M-59 was defunded by Granholm when she was first elected (Democratic governor, Republican county) since then it has been redone in a piece meal fashion.
Call or write your State Rep or the Governors office to voice your displeasure, the township can't really do anything but make requests like the rest of us.

We were aquainted with the Morse family through sports. He and his wife were some of the nicest…Read More people we met. So terribly, terribly sad. We all make mistakes.
I have to wonder if the outcome would have been the same if there were guardrails instead of steel cables in the median.
Linda LaBusch April 24, 2013 at 06:14 pm
To the Morse family,
I am so terribly sad to hear of Marty's death. I send my condolences and all my…Read More love to you.

Having local police would be a wonderful addition to our town. We could possibly use a hybrid…Read More system with minimal personnel and rely on the Sheriff's department to cover the outlying areas of our town.
Until then, I'm glad that we live in an state that allows you to provide for your own personal protection until the Sheriff arrives, which could take a while considering we don't have a local police force.

Brighton's police department budget is more than the entire budget of Hartland Township.

How about you do some research and think before you start suing everybody. These cable barriers…Read More save more lives than they take because they prevent stray vehicles from entering oncoming traffic and causing pile-ups and more deaths. It was not the state of Michigan's fault that he ended up in the median, you aren't supposed to drive there. I would speculate that the reason we have these cable barriers is because someone like YOU sued the state when their loved one ran into oncoming traffic and died. YOU would say, "Well, the state must do something to prevent a trajedy like this in the future...." You happy now? Go sue yourself.
Rick Paulson April 20, 2013 at 01:37 pm
I knew these cables were a bad idea when I seen them being installed. If the intent was to keep…Read More vehicles from crossing the median a regular guard rail should have been used. These cables are pure shredders for smaller cars and motorcyles. No matter the mistake this man(husband & father) may have made the chance is very good he'd still be here if not for those cables. if you skim a guard rail it can keep you still on the road, skim those cables and they grab you and if you go into them your done. The family should sue the state and they should be removed. My heart goes out to his wife and children.
Rick Paulson April 20, 2013 at 01:39 pm
You are 100% right and a regular guard rail would have kept him alive.
Kim April 12, 2013 at 01:48 pm
Wow, that is awesome! I had them out last week to install 7 new smoke alarms and they used 10 year…Read More batteries. Mike Bernardi did a great job and was so kind to in explaining things to us and my kids. Needless to say he suggested an escape ladder to my kids for their rooms. Guess what my daughter asked for her Birthday? You got it. Bless her heart. Thanks hartland Fire Department for taking great care of our community!

We can't expect the school to be aware of every verbal incident, can we? Like "hartland…Read More eagle" said, if there was bullying, the victim should have reported it and we can be assured the school would deal with it to the BEST of their ABILITIES. Unfortunately, there is only so much they can do; we can't expect the schools to be responsible for our kids' behavior...the kids are and they need to learn from their mistakes, hence, the court system. Gwen, perhaps you could volunteer at the school as a mentor or with a Big Brother/Big Sister organization, and really be able to help troubled youth.

Or our society is one in which we recognize we are all part of a community,…Read More and we all have a role to play.
Absolutely, the kids are without question responsible for their actions. And yes, the parents should be doing everything they can to raise responsible children that would not do something like this. But that doesn't mean other members in the community can't also work towards creating an environment in which these sorts of things don't occur.
Do I think the store should wall-off the liquor section? No. But there's nothing wrong with something making that suggestion. And there'd be nothing wrong if Meijer decided to go that route. And that suggestion does not mean that DON feels that the kids are not to blame.
Rather than trying to turn others' suggestions into some negative commentary about our society, give others the benefit of the doubt and realize that if someone contributes an idea that others have not mentioned, it doesn't mean they're dealing in absolutes that you can then spin into "Blame it [on] someone else".
And if you think that this comment of mine is guilty of the same lack of giving the "benefit of the doubt", that is correct. Although I think it would fall into the "how dare you not tolerate intolerance" type of argument.
