Not Just for Kids: Get a Workout at Hartland Playgrounds

Playground fun doesn’t have to be reserved for kids. Adults can enjoy these outdoor play spaces too—and get a great workout at the same time.

Getting a good workout doesn’t require being stuck in a gym during the late summer heat or those deliciously crisp fall days that follow. To change things up a bit in your workout routine, consider making use of a free and easily accessible resource: your local playground. While playgrounds themselves are nothing new, in recent years, adults are returning to them in greater numbers—and not just to entertain their kids. Thanks to the rise in popularity of outdoor boot camps, which often make use of equipment available in parks and playgrounds, many adults are taking a second look at playgrounds as an affordable way to exercise their inner child and outer adult—and make exercising seem less like a chore and more (dare we say it?) fun. …

Run for Boston To Be Held at Kensington Wednesday

Running Fit is uniting Michigan runners to show their support for Boston.

To celebrate the safe return of Boston Marathon runners and to show solidarity for Boston, Running Fit will be hosting a "Runners For Boston" run/walk this week. The unity 4.15 mile run/walk will be held on Wednesday, April 24 at 6:30 p.m.at Kensington Metropark, and participants should meet at the East Boat Launch. On the Running Fit website, Randy Step writes that running has taken on a new meaning for runners after the April 15 bombings. "Every step feels like a dedication to those who suffered. Just heading out the door is like thumbing our nose at terrorists that are out to change our way of life and limit our freedoms," he writes on the website. Cheer on the Michigan Wolverines in the NCAA Championship Game Tonight

Go Blue! Cheer on the Michigan men’s basketball team as the Wolverines take on Louisville in the NCAA championship game Monday night. Finally, the NCAA Final Four is here. The March Madness 2013 Final Four television schedule begins Saturday with a television schedule that includes Louisville vs. Wichita State followed by Michigan vs. Syracuse. The Vegas lines on the Final Four give Louisville a 9.5-point edge and favor Michigan by 2. Hartland Takes First Place at State Archery Tournament

Hartland senior Chad Cooper was named the 2013 overall male state champion.

Hartland Schools hit the bullseye at Michigan's State Virtual Archery Tournament, bringing home first place in the high school, middle school and elementary school divisions. More than 700 student archers from 29 schools participating in the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) competed in the recent tournament, according to a press release from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. The Hartland High School team came in first, followed by Gaylord St. Mary Cathedral in second and Christian Homeschoolers of Northern Michigan in third. The Hartland Middle School teams took both first and second in the middle school division, with Christian Homeschoolers of Northern Michigan coming in third. And Hartland's elementary school …

Hurricanes Swim Club Continues to Develop Local Talent

Swimmers representing Hartland's local swim club end season with impressive finishes.

This season, swimmers from the Hartland Hurricanes Swim Club, which range in age from seven to 18, had the opportunity to compete in several higher-level meets, with many of the swimmers finishing with qualifying race times, ranking them among the best swimmers in the state. “We took a bunch of kids (12 and under) to Districts, and some of those kids qualified beyond that to go to Junior Olympics and then some of those kids qualified beyond that to go to the State Meet,” Hurricanes swim coach Maria Puranen said.  As the youth competitive team, which began 10 years ago, continues to grow each year, the success and development of the young team is exciting for Puranen who also coaches at the high school level. “Almost 100 percent of our …
