"The biggest change this year is that students are required take a fruit or vegetable for it to be considered a meal, if they do not we …

Newly hired Michigan public school employees would pay more for their pensions and lose state-funded health care in retirement under a bill headed to Gov. Rick Snyder for approval.
Newly hired public school employees in Michigan would pay more for their pensions and lose state-funded health care in retirement under a bill headed to Gov. Rick Snyder for approval. Sponsors of the bill, which was approved Wednesday in the Republican-controlled House and Senate, said it will save school districts an estimated $300 million annually and trim $15 billion in legacy debt, according to The Detroit News. "This system is costing school districts more and more every year and we need this reform before all school funding goes to pay for retirement instead of to teach Michigan students," Rep. Bill Rogers R-Brighton said in a press release. "It is our duty to help our school districts get out of this impossible situation and they …

Earlier this week, signs with the wording “Speed Hump” were placed next to the newly installed speed bumps in the Hartland High School parking lot. On Thursday morning, the “Speed Hump” signs were taken down, according to Hartland Schools Maintenance and Operations Coordinator, Patty Glynn. “The director of operations (George Waldrup) was asked by our superintendent Janet Sifferman, to have the signs taken down,” Glynn said. “We were asked to re-order different signs with different wording. So, yes –it’s not going to have the word “hump” in it.” Glynn, who explained that the word hump is the correct terminology within the industry for the speed bumps that were installed, said that although there were no specific complaints regarding the …

Signs of summer coming to an end are slowly starting to pop up around town as fall sports teams begin their practices, teacher’s head back to school preparing their classrooms and school supplies in stores start disappearing. Hartland teacher of the year for 2012, Dotty Selix, shares her own list with parents to help ease the transition of summer fun to classroom ready. Number one on her list of helping to prepare students is to ask your child what they are nervous about and then role-play that scenario. “How to introduce yourself, how to ask for help, those kinds of things,” Selix said. “And along that kind of nervous thing, it might be a good time in August to start re-connecting with friends from school." Selix also suggests that …

I love the idea that we could save food and donate to others in need. It also teaches kids not to throw things away, but to save them for later or that there are others out there who are less fortunate. I tell my children that I will be less upset if they bring home uneaten food than if they were to throw it away. We discuss waste and hold discussions on other children who often have little to …   more ›
