Brighton Township Residents Outraged Over Gravel Pit Mining Proposal

Residents are concerned about ground water contamination and other environmental factors if the permits for the site on Jacoby Road are approved.

Brighton Township residents packed Township Hall Tuesday night to share their concerns about a site plan proposal to resume mining and fill activities at the gravel pit on Jacoby Road, west of Kensington Road. The gravel pit has been abandoned since 2009 when the property owner Sunset Sand & Gravel went out of business. Clearwater Development, LLC, purchased the property in April and has filed for permits to resume mining and filling activities on the site. Township resident Gerald Putt said his biggest concern is contaminating the aquifer, which would then contaminate his well which is just down the road from the site. "We have scarred a bunch of the township - a big area - with these gravel pits," Putt said. "If you drive by there, and …

Brighton Township Man Recalls His Role in Northwest Flight 255 Crash

Today is the 25th Anniversary of the crash that killed 156 people at Metro-Detroit Airport in 1987.

Twenty-five years ago today, Brighton Township resident Bruce Schneider responded to one of the worst disasters in aviation history - the crash of Northwest Flight 255 at Detroit-Metro Airport that killed 156 people, leaving a 4-year-old girl as the lone survivor. "That was probably the most horrendous thing I've ever seen," Schneider said of the crash. "Even the guys working with me who were Vietnam veterans and a lot of military veterans couldn't believe the devastation." Schneider, who had been a police officer for 15 years, was a sergeant for the Wayne County Sheriff's Department in the road patrol office stationed at the airport at the time. The afternoon of Aug. 16, 1987 had been a carefree one for Schneider. He had enjoyed a bike …

MDOT Hosts Public Meeting for Brighton Township Interchange Improvements

New lanes and bridges are proposed for the I-96/US-23 interchange in Brighton Township.

Two informational meetings will be held on May 17 at Brighton Township Hall to discuss proposed improvements to the I-96/US-23 interchange. The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has proposed constructing six new through-lanes on I-96 between the current eastbound and westbound lanes of the highway, along with building three new bridges over northbound and southbound US-23, and over Old US-23. The existing lanes of I-96 will become collector/distributor (CD) lanes as a way to help ramp traffic move smoothly through the interchange. The existing six bridges over US-23 and Old US-23 also would be rebuilt. At the open house, MDOT will explain the status of the study, proposed improvements and timeline, and the process involved for …

Salvation Army of Livingston County Receives a Golden Donation

A Brighton Township man donated two 1-ounce gold bars at the Genoa Township Walmart on Friday.

The Salvation Army of Livingston County got a delightful surprise when two gold bars - worth about $1,600 each - were deposited into a red kettle outside the retail doors at the Genoa Township Walmart on Friday. Livingston Daily identified the anonymous gold donor as Frank Wittman, a Brighton Township resident, on Tuesday. Wittman has been donating gold bars every holiday season for several years, according to Captain Aaron Ortman, corps officer of The Salvation Army of Livingston County. "We've gotten the gold bar donations every year for many, many years," Ortman said. "It goes back to before my wife and I were here." Ortman, who has been with the Salvation Army of Livingston County for four holiday seasons, said his first year they …
