Church Seeks Value of Theological Treasures
Hartland United Methodist Church pondering future of Luther, Calvin volumes that are more than 400 years old.
Hartland United Methodist Church guards a long-ago legacy of theological treasure that Pastor Fred Finzer said will likely be examined by a specialist in the coming year to determine their value for a possible sale. The books — which feature the writings of Protestant theologians John Calvin and Martin Luther — are more than 400 years old. They are part of a collection originally donated in 1929 by John Robert Crouse, a church member who's considered one of Hartland's most influential figures through his philantrophy, Finzer said. Crouse made the gift in honor of his mother, Betsey, and the collection mostly include Bibles or theological volumes from the late 19th or early 20th centuries. The older books — The Sermons of M.
