House Bills 4465-4466 were approved in Lansing on Tuesday and await a full House vote.

Two house bills that would eliminate the foreign language requirement for high school students were approved in Lansing on Tuesday in the House Education Committee. Currently, students must take two years of foreign language in grades 9-12 to graduate and Hartland High School recently added sign language classes in the district to help complete the requirement. Co-sponsored by State Reps. Cindy Denby, R-Handy Township, and Bill Rogers, R-Genoa Township, House Bills 4465-4466 would also modify required credits in physical education, the arts, career and technical education, science and math, according to the Press & Argus. By eliminating the two-year foreign language credit, the proposal hopes to give students not headed to college more …

I agree that SOME students will benefit from learning an additional language, I disagree with it being a mandatory requirement. I have a son with mild learning difficulties and always struggled with school. With all the additional requirements made on students and teachers, we was unable to get the additional guidance and time needed to actually learn. I now have a college student that can't pass…   more ›

I can no longer support the Republican Party because of this woman and Representative Rogers. I remember a photo of JFK gracing my Grandmothers house, but confused as to why my Father was so opposed to the Democrats. As such I was raised a Republican, and continued to do so until this lady took so much away from my family an I.   more ›

Michigan's Credit Rating Highest Since 2007

Lawmaker who represents Hartland provides updates and views on various topics.

By Cindy Denby Every day there is more evidence that Michigan's economy is becoming healthier, and I am confident that this trend is going to continue.  This month Fitch Ratings upgraded Michigan's general credit rating to AA which is the highest it has been since 2007. The upgrade reflects the solid economic and fiscal recovery our state has experienced over the past two years. Additionally, Standard and Poor has updated Michigan's credit outlook to positive. Over the past two years we have worked to make the budget in our state more structurally balanced as well as building up our budget stabilization fund. Michigan has made great strides and with positive ratings from all three Wall Street agencies that progress is being recognized. …

Prepare for Warm Weather with Boating Safety Course

Lawmaker who represents Hartland provides updates and views on various topics.

By Cindy Denby As we move closer to summer and warm temperatures, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources would like to remind anyone who plans on operating a watercraft this year to take a boating safety course.  Anyone born on or before Dec. 31, 1978 may operate a personal watercraft (PWC) without restrictions, but those born after that date must obtain a boater's safety certificate.  The minimum age to operate a PWC in Michigan is 14 years old. Classroom and online options are available to those who are interested.  Spring is the optimal time to take these courses, so that the safety information you learn is fresh in your mind for the duration of the boating season.  For more information and resources, I encourage you to visit the …

Cracking Down on Bridge Card Fraud, Improving Michigan's Economy

Lawmaker who represents Hartland provides updates and views on various topics.

By Cindy Denby Protecting hard-working taxpayers in the state is one of my top priorities as your state legislator. With that in mind I voted in committee to pass a bill that will crack down on the fraud and abuse that has become prevalent within the Bridge Card system. The state Bridge Card program provides families and people in need with essential goods and services House Bill 4042 would require the state to perform a monthly check of the Social Security Death Index database. If a recipient is found to be deceased, the department would terminate Bridge Card access. The bill also would require the DHS to check if any recipients or applicants are currently in prison, in which case their access would likewise be terminated.  Such common-…

Saving for Your Child's College Education

Lawmaker who represents Hartland provides updates and views on various topics.

By Cindy Denby Saving for your children's college years can be a daunting task. Every year it seems the cost of a college education increases. The Michigan Education Trust (MET) is an excellent way to invest in your child's future. The trust allows individuals to pre-purchase credit hours toward future tuition at any of the state's public universities, colleges and community college to lock in today's tuition rates. The 2013 enrollment period is ongoing through Sept. 30 of this year. Prices for enrollment are still at 2012 tuition and will continue at that rate until April 30. Starting May 1 the prices will increase by 1.5 percent. Parents, grandparents, guardians, and other family friends can purchase a MET contract for a child. MET …

Improving Veteran's Rights, Second Saturday Program

Lawmaker who represents Hartland provides updates and views on various topics.

By Cindy Denby This year improving veteran's rights is a main point in our Action Plan, and I am committed to working towards that goal. Last week Secretary of State Ruth Johnson joined with us to take the first step in working toward that goal by introducing initiatives that are designed to help our Michigan veterans.  These initiatives include a bill that would allow for a veterans designation on state driver's license and ID cards. The secretary of state also laid out plans to design a special license plate to raise money for special veteran's funds.  These ideas are designed to help the over 600,000 veterans in our state take advantage of the benefits they deserve.  It is nice to see that work is already being done for our veterans, …
