Winter Sports in Michigan

Lawmaker who represents Hartland provides updates and views on various topics.

By Cindy Denby Winter is extremely beautiful in Michigan and though shoveling and scraping our vehicles are not anyone's favorite, our state has lots of fun things to do in the winter. Many local communities throughout our state hold community events and festivals during the winter. These festivals typically include both indoor and outdoor activities and are fun for the whole family. Winter sports are extremely popular in our state and there are options for everyone regardless of your athletic ability. Residents can enjoy sledding without even needing to leave their hometown and ice skating is a fun option for everyone. Snowshoeing and cross country skiing also are fun activities that people often overlook and haven't tried.  Of course …

Job Creation and Healthy Economy Top Priority

Lawmaker who represents Hartland provides updates and views on various topics.

By Cindy Denby This week, Gov. Snyder gave his third State of the State address before a joint session of the Legislature. The governor gave a thoughtful speech that highlighted our accomplishments over the past two years, and addressed the areas that need more work. My top priority has been and remains making our economy healthy while fostering an environment for job creation. Looking back, I'm pleased with the progress we have made in those areas but know there is still much to do.  The governor asked us to seize opportunities that will keep us on a path to prosperity and I look forward to doing that this term. The governor also talked about progress we have made on his dashboards, which he introduced during his previous State of the …

Drive Safe During Hazardous Conditions

Lawmaker who represents Hartland provides updates and views on various topics.

By Cindy Denby Now that winter is here and some snow is on the ground, it's important to make sure that we are remembering to practice good driving tips in winter weather conditions. Snowplows will be out in full force and the Michigan Department of Transportation and County Road Association of Michigan are urging drivers to remember that snowplows need "room to groom." Remember that snowplows have limited visibility and drivers cannot see behind their trucks. In addition, snowplows often throw up clouds of snow, reducing visibility around the truck as well, so be sure to be careful when driving near or around a plow. Motorists should never pass a moving snowplow on the right, as new wing-plow technology allows the blade of a plow to clear…

Shop Local and Shop Safe During Holiday Season

Lawmaker who represents Hartland provides updates and views on various topics.

By Cindy Denby The holiday season is somehow already upon us and it's time to prepare and get our homes ready for this joyous time. What many people may not realize is that Michigan is home to more than 700 Christmas tree growers and 54 poinsettia growers. Local growers are an essential part of our economy, and Michigan Christmas tree growers harvest approximately three million trees each year, and poinsettia growers produce 2.3 million plants each annually. During this wonderful season, you can help support our state as you honor holiday traditions and local growers by purchasing trees and poinsettias grown right here in Michigan. Shop Safely During Holiday Rush The holiday shopping season is also well underway as consumers try to get …

Be Aware of Dangers of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Lawmaker who represents Hartland provides updates and views on various topics.

By Cindy Denby As cold weather sets in and we are all spending much more time inside, I want to encourage all residents to learn how to protect themselves against carbon monoxide poisoning. Because carbon monoxide cannot be detected by sight, smell, or taste, prevention and awareness are essential to protecting yourself and your family.   Carbon monoxide is a toxic gas that is produced whenever any fuel such as gas, oil, or kerosene is burned. To avoid the risk of carbon monoxide exposure, residents should not use fuel-burning appliances including generators, grills, and camp stoves inside homes, basements, or garages. These appliances must be kept outside of these areas and away from any open windows or doors. Running a car in an enclosed…

Fire Escape Plans, Smoke Alarms Help Save Lives

Lawmaker who represents Hartland provides updates and views on various topics.

By Cindy Denby  The month of October is a busy time of year for Michigan residents. Somewhere in between football games and trips to the cider mill, we must find time to prepare our homes and families for the cold months ahead. This transition period is the perfect time for individuals and families to develop and practice home fire escape plans. According to the National Fire Incident Reporting System, last year 68 people died in home fires and fire departments responded to 15,578 home fires throughout the state of Michigan. Seventy-five percent of all fire fatalities occur in home fires, putting residents at the greatest risk. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), less than 25 percent of Michigan residents have …
