The Winner of Patch's Best Halloween Costume in America Contest is......

The Pirate Carrying a Mermaid Optical Illusion has been named Patch's Halloween Costume in America. Its creator -- and wearer -- will receive a $5,000 prize for having the most creative and innovative costume.

Ashley Playford dressed up as a pirate carrying a mermaid this Halloween. Well, actually, she dressed up as the mermaid. Well...Her creativity has earned her the title of Patch's Best Halloween Costume in America and a $5,000 grand prize.   It was Playford's use of an optical illusion that won us over. Take a look at the photo she entered on Peekskill-Cortlandt Patch! Almost 4,000 Patch users entered the contest from Oct. 15 to Nov. 5, with costumes ranging from the Eiffel Tower and Honey Boo Boo to a flower pot and a clever interpretation of "binders full of women." National judges chose 1 finalist from each Patch state based on who had the most creative and innovative costume (we combined North Carolina & South Carolina for this contest…

Tips from Sheriff Bezotte to Keep Kids Safe on Halloween

“Halloween is a fun time in Livingston County, let’s make it a safe time as well.”

On Halloween, our streets will soon be filled with little ghosts, goblins and witches trick-or-treating.  To ensure this Halloween is safe for your children, Sheriff Bob Bezotte offers the following safety tips: “Halloween is a fun time in Livingston County, let’s make it a safe time as well.”

Show Us Your Jack-O-Lantern

Have you carved your pumpkin for Halloween yet? Share your photos here.

There are many versions of how the Jack-o-lantern came to be. According to Wikipedia, some believed they were a way of protecting your home against the Undead with superstitious people using them specifically to ward away vampires.  Others believed they were a way to welcome deceased loved ones into their homes on Halloween night. There are also several versions of an old Irish myth about a man named "Stingy Jack" who tricked the Devil from claiming his soul. According to The History Channel, after Jack died, God wouldn't claim his soul and the Devil refused to allow him into Hell, so he put a coal in a carved-out turnip and began roaming the Earth. Fun Facts What is your favorite thing to carve on your pumpkin? Tell us in comments.

Hurricane Sandy Will Impact Michigan Weather This Week

As the storm hits the East Coast heading into Monday, rain, wind and cold weather will be felt in the Midwest—including southeastern Michigan—this week.

There won't be any flooding or evacuations, but Hurricane Sandy's reach will have a big impact on Michigan weather this week. The storm system—expected to be one of the largest and most destructive in history—has resulted in evacuations and state of emergency declarations across the east coast, as well as the closure of public transportation in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia. According to the National Weather Service, Sandy is anticipated to make landfall on the New Jersey coast Monday night. As it moves west, the system will bring high winds, colder weather and rain to the Midwest. The effects will be felt throughout southern Michigan, though the greatest impact will be on the southwest coast near Lake Michigan. A wind …

How to Carve a Pumpkin from Hartland Patch for Halloween

Display your carved pumpkin on your porch in Hartland for Halloween! And then use the suggested recipe to make delicious pumpkin seeds.

The art of carving a pumpkin gets more creative every year. There’s always the traditional jack o’ lantern face and spooky Halloween creatures. Then there are faces and objects to carve from popular book characters, movies and pop culture events that have happened throughout the year. After you pick a pumpkin at Spicer Orchards or from the pumpkin patch at Our Savior Lutheran Church, use the tips below to create a spooky decoration for your porch. To make a neat, clean carve, follow these instructions: 1. Cut a hole in the top of the pumpkin with a large kitchen knife, preferrably one that is serrated. Be sure to cut at about a 45-degree angle inward so that the top will sit nicely once you’re done carving. If you’re carving with kids, …

Last-Minute, Clever and Easy-to-Make Halloween Costume Ideas

How about Angelina Jolie's leg or Honey Boo Boo?

Mark my words. Courtesy of the recent presidential debates, expect to see an abundance of Big Birds, women in binders and maybe even some horsebacked, bayonet-waving fools on this year’s Halloween party circuit.  After all, Americans love to mix politics (and pop culture) with Halloween revelry while also dropping a lot of cash for the opportunity to do so.  Last year, the National Retail Federation projected Americans to spend an average of $72 each on the occasion for a grand total of $6.9 billion. Broken down, that equates to $1 billion for children's costumes, $1.2 billion for adult’s costumes, and $310 million on outfits for pets. Oh, brother. I guess we should brace ourselves for lots of Seamus-in-a-car-carrier-strapped-to-the-roof-…

Halloween Recipe: Jack-O-Lantern Sloppy Joe Pie

Halloween is on a Wednesday, and you're going to need a quick dinner recipe to feed the family before trick-or-treating - try this festive twist on a classic recipe.

Whether you're fueling the kids before they hit the streets trick-or-treating, or preparing for a big Halloween Party - White Lake-Highland Patch has festive recipes to help you make Halloween a night to remember. For dinner, start with a twist on the classic sloppy Joe with this Jack-O-Latern Sloppy Joe Pie. The recipe originally comes from Taste of Home, but I made a few tweaks of my own. To make this recipe you'll need: In a large skillet, cook the beef and onion over medium heat until the meat is no longer pink; drain the fat. In a small bowl, combine the flour, salsa and chili sauce until blended. Stir it into skillet, then add the corn and brown sugar. Place one pie crust into the bottom of a deep-dish 9-inch pie plate. Fill the pie …

Patch Picks the Top 10 Scariest Halloween Movies of All Time

Do you love scary movies? Which ones do you think are the best picks for a Halloween fright fest?

First, let me preface this list by laying out my bona fides as a horror expert. I have watched a lot of scary movies. My Comcast onDemand playlist is almost entirely populated with FEARnet movies. I also happen to be a card-carrying member of the Commander USA fan club. Don’t know who Commander USA is? Well, then you don’t want to get into a discussion with me about Mexican vampire or other low budget horror movies.   The following list includes my personal picks for the best scary movies of all time. Noticeably absent are zombie movies, most slasher flicks and classic, but not really all that scary, horror movies. Why did I exclude those? Well, I don’t understand zombies. They are gross, dead things. Why do they need to eat? “Zombieland…
