Youth Running Program Races to Hartland

Registration for Great Road Racers is now open through Hartland Community Education.

A new summer youth running program sponsored by Hartland Community Education will be offered this summer for all Livingston County students entering fourth grade and higher.  The program mission of Great Road Racers (GRR), is to “promote running as a source of physical, mental, and social well-being while having a common interest in having fun and staying fit,” according to program organizer and Hartland Middle School cross country and track coach Gerald Bliznick. The summer program will also help prepare student runners for the upcoming MHSSA Cross County seasons as well. “There is a niche for this younger runner program in Livingston County,” Bliznick wrote in an email to Patch. “Athletes will be introduced to Good Form Running (G.F.R…

Community Education Instructor Inspires Children to Stay Active

For more than 20 years, Jan Doke has worked to keep kids moving in Hartland.

Dodging the bright yellow balls aimed in her direction with an easy going laugh, Jan Doke stood on the other side of a tennis court, facing eight kids armed with tennis rackets. "Extra point for whoever can hit me," she yelled out to the young tennis players. Laughing, coaching and listening intently as one of her young students tells her the story about her missing tooth during a lesson on how to hold a racket, the long-time instructor for Hartland Community Education shows her years of experience and endless patience. A popular instructor for more than 20 years at Hartland Community Education, Doke has been teaching kids in the community one very important lesson – stay active and have fun while doing it. “If you want your child to be …

Hartland Pool Will Re-Open July 23

Summer swim lessons scheduled to begin on July 23 will be reinstated.

It's already been a long, hot summer, and many Hartland residents might have missed the relief of the community pool, which has been closed since the beginning of June. The Hartland pool closed for maintenance on June 4 and was originally scheduled to open back up July 9. The re-open date was pushed back, however, due to permit issues, according to Community Education director Michelle Otis. The delayed opening meant that many summer programs, including swim lessons had to be canceled. Relief is in sight, however, since according to Otis, the aquatic center will open it's doors on July 23. Swim classes that were scheduled to begin July 23 will be reinstated, according to Otis, and will run for two weeks through the end of the month.  …

Hartland Project Awarded $500 in State Contest

Community "gathering place" will be located in the Hartland Educational Support Service Center.

The small, community Hartland project that was entered into the Let's Save Michigan "It's About Place" contest was awarded $500 by contest judges. The contest, which started in May with online voting of 46 projects from 28 Michigan communities, concluded this week. The grand prize winner of $2000 was the Canfield Social Yard project in Detroit. The project is hoping to raise awareness and foster a culture of neighborhood and civic engagement that will support existing community efforts and encourage new projects. Hartland's project was spearheaded by Hartland resident Karen Wisinski, which is hoping to create a year-round gathering place. With a comfortable setting and fun additions such a poetry wall, Wisinski said that several local moms…

Hartland Gathering Place Needs Your Votes

Local mom submitted entry into state-wide community improvement contest.

It started off as just something that sounded like a fun idea for Hartland resident Karen Wisinski. Coming up with a community improvement project that was designed to promote community togetherness. The Hartland mom of two says she has always had an interest in community planning and during her research, came across a contest from the organization, "Let's Save Michigan," that asked communities to send in their ideas on how to make their towns better. Submitting a plan that several local moms helped put together, the design is now in the running to potentially win money that would create a community-focused gathering place within Hartland. The plan targets a small area in the Hartland Education Support Service Center, a building which …

Dads and Daughters Reflect on 15 Years of Dances

Two Hartland teens accompanied their fathers to their last Daddy/Daughter Dance this year.

On Thursday night, Hartland Community Education sponsored its annual Daddy/Daughter dance and for the last time, 17-year-olds Brooke Stratford and Courtney Lee attended the dance with the most important men in their lives -- their dads. “We promised them, our very first time,” Courtney Lee said. “We promised them we would go until our senior year in high school.” It was a promise and a tradition that began 15 years ago, but the two young friends, now seniors at Hartland High School, grew up together and kept their word, never missing a dance since 1997 -- much to the delight of their proud fathers, David Lee and Ken Stratford. “It’s a pretty big deal, we get a little choked up sometimes when we think about it,” David Lee said. “But its …
