Hartland High School principal Ben Mainka notified parents that in negotiations between the Board of Education and the teachers association, one of the things discussed was a 7-period school day at the high school.
During the State of the School address in February, Hartland High School principal Ben Mainka spoke to the audience about the possibility of adding a seventh hour to the school day. During his address, Mainka said that the seventh hour day was also being considered in other districts such as Howell and Brighton, but explained to the audience that it would not mean a longer school day. “What it means is that the class period would be reduced in time,” he said. “It opens up with more flexibility in the schedule, more opportunities." A video shows a student attacking freshman Katya Adamkiewicz on March 12.
The Livingston County Sheriff's Department is now seeking charges against the Hartland High School student who was seen attacking another student in class on March 12, according to the Press & Argus. A video posted on Facebook by a third student shows the female student grabbing the back of 14-year-old Katya Adamkiewicz hair, throwing her to the ground and punching her until an adult steps in to stop the attack. Both students are in ninth grade at Hartland High School. According to Katya's mother Aurore Henze, the incident took place during her daughter’s fifth hour class with the teacher in the classroom. Mother and daughter appear on Fox 2 News after two students were suspended after a fight that was videotaped and posted on Facebook left her daughter injured.
Updated at 10:45 a.m. A Hartland mother spoke out about a fight that took place in a classroom at Hartland High School between her daughter and another female student. Aurore Henze and her daughter Katya Adamkiewicz appeared on Fox 2 News on Thursday night, speaking out about the incident that left 14-year-old Katya with injuries severe enough to visit Urgent Care. According to Henze, the incident took place on Tuesday during her daughter’s fifth hour class with the teacher in the classroom. The Eagles lost 5-4 in the Division 2 finals.
Hartland High School lost its bid for a first Division 2 state title in hockey Saturday morning when they were defeated by Livonia Stevenson. The Eagles lost the game, 5-4. Chris McRae scored twice for Hartland. Austin Flores and Ned O'Boyle also scored for the Eagles. Hartland beat Port Huron Northern in the semifinals, West Bloomfield in the quarterfinals, and Walled Lake Northern in the regional final to advance to the finals. Hartland High School will play in its first Division 2 championship game on Saturday.
It was an exciting finish for Hartland's hockey team Thursday as they won the Division 2 semifinals in overtime. The Eagles beat Port Huron Northern with a final score of 3-2 at Compuware Arena in Plymouth. According to MLive.com, Hartland forward Josh Ruthig had the game winning goal with 2:16 left in overtime. "The team just wanted to get this done," Ruthig told MLive. "We just couldn't give up. Coach said, 'will over skill' and that's what we had to do." Hartland now heads to its first championship game on Saturday, where the team will play Livonia Stevenson for the title.
