Hartland Township is Seeking Applications for New Planning Director

Township manager James Wickman hopes to fill the position within the next few months.

The Hartland Township board discussed the soon to be vacated Director of Planning position during Tuesday nights board meeting.   Mardy Stirling, who has been the Director of Planning for three years, will be leaving at the end of August to pursue a career in the medical field, according to township supervisor Bill Fountain.   “She’s a wonderful team member and we’re going to miss her,” he said.    During the interim, the board approved Tony Savoni, who is currently in charge of Ordinance Enforcement for Hartland Township as the Interim Zoning Administrator.   Applications will be accepted until the end of this week for the open director position and township manager James Wickman says he hopes to start interviews soon and have the …

Hartland Ice House Liquor License Approved by Township

After a public hearing, the Hartland Township board approved the license by a 6-1 vote.

The Hartland Township Board of Trustees voted 6-1 to approve a resolution granting a Tavern liquor license, which allows only beer and wine to be served, to the Hartland Ice House. Treasurer Kathie Horning was the only dissenting vote. The request will now be sent to the Liquor Control Commission in Lansing, which will make the final decision at the state level to authorize the liquor license to the restaurant inside the sports complex. The board voted in November to publish a notice of intent to make a new liquor license available, the first new liquor license the township has been able to offer since 2006. Mark Schaffer, owner of the Hartland Sports Center and also the Kensington Valley Ice House in Brighton Township, applied for the …

Potential Teen Center in the Works for Hartland

"Next Door" is hoping to provide a safe place for local teens.

A plan for a potential Hartland teen center was presented to the Hartland Township board on Tuesday night. Hartland Middle School teacher Kay Fountain and trustee Joe Petrucci are spearheading a new project called “Next Door,” a teen center that would be located in the old Hartland Township building at 3205 Hartland Road, across the street from the middle school.  The center would be available at no cost for students in grades 7 through 12 and would be focused on providing a teen-friendly environment with adult supervision. Daily activities such as pick-up games, ping pong tournaments, pizza days and video games would be available for the kids. The main purpose, however, according to Fountain, would be to provide a safe space for the youth…

Sounds like a fantastic idea...I'm the "hang out" house for my son and his friends who will all graduate this year. I will miss them terribly, but this could help solve my empty nest feelings with volunteering. All kids need a safe place to "fall"....lets hope this comes to be!!   more ›

WITH VIDEO: Hartland Township Breaks Ground on M-59 Park Project

Local players, coaches and parents attend dedication ceremony at future site of sports fields.

A ground breaking ceremony took place Tuesday night for the M-59 Park Project.  The 64-acre park will include eleven sports fields for soccer, football and lacrosse off of M-59 near Pleasant Valley Road. The board voted unanimously last month to approve construction bids by Eagle Golf Construction and hopes the park will be ready by summer of 2013. The project is estimated to cost the township $734,000 and will be paid for using funds from the Captiol Improvement Fund, which is currently around 2.2 million dollars.

Hartland Township Looks to Approve Contractor for Athletic Field Project

Eagle Gold Construction submitted bid of $640,000 for project that could start in April.

The Hartland Township Board of Trustees agreed to vote at their next meeting to approve a contractor for a 64-acre athletic park located off of M-59, near Pleasant Valley Road during Tuesday nights board meeting. Eagle Gold Construction, located in Fenton, was the low bidder out of eleven other bids, coming in at $640,000, which was 30 percent lower than estimates the township had previously received. Construction will begin in April, according to Township manager James Wickman, and will include six football/lacrosse fields and four soccer fields which will be ready by the summer of 2013.  The township board has plans to contact representatives from Michigan State University, experts in athletic fields, regarding seeding for the fields. “…

Hartland Township Sewer Rate Increases Moderate But Continue

Customers to pay 2 percent more per quarter after more than three years of jumps of 4-5 percent.

More than 1,400 customers of Hartland Township's sewer system will be paying 2 percent more per quarter — a change officials welcome after more than three years of rate hikes at 4-5 percent. In the short term, that means the most common user, one that doesn't have a meter with a grinder pump, will pay about $3 more in the next quarter from about $159 to $162, according to the release. The new rates are based on a five-year rate study the Township Board reviewed in early December and customers will see the newest increase reflected on the bill they receive in April. But while rates are stabilizing to help the township repair a long-term deficit, the planned frequent increases still mean customers' bills will be between about $230 and $360 …

Hartland Township Fluoride Decision Continues to Produce Waves

Support, opposition washes up on editorial pages.

The Hartland Township Board of Trustees were praised and criticized over their decision to end water fluoridation in two letters to the editor published this week in the Livingston County Daily Press & Argus. Dr. William L. Metz, executive director of the Livingston District Dental Society, said he was "outraged" with the vote. "It has been proven that fluoridation helps fight tooth decay and helps prevent more serious health problems that may occur as a result," wrote Metz, also a Hartland resident. "Water fluoridation has been recognized by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as one of the 10 great public health achievements of the 20th century due to its ability to prevent tooth decay." In contrast, Fowlerville resident …

Rachael, thank you for providing local insight and for pointing out the volunteer efforts happening around us. Unfortunately, you are arguing in good faith and pointing to local information about dentists in Livingston County, but the people you are replying to are anti-flouride activists who are not local and get their information from feeds. They spam local news sites all over the country and …   more ›

Latest Link: Hartland Township Trustees Lampooned Over Ending Water Fluoridation

Trustee leading charge to stop the practice said column that references 1964 comedy 'Dr. Strangelove' and the John Birch Society was funny.

The Hartland Township Board is the subject of an MLive.com column that satirizes its vote this week to stop adding fluoride to the township's drinking water. The column by Jeff T. Wattrick writes the trustees "have thwarted a communist plot to sap and impurify the Livingston County community’s precious bodily fluids with their fluoridated water." This seems to compare board members to Gen. Jack T. Ripper of the 1964 political satire Dr. Strangelove — whose famous YouTube clip on the subject is included (here, too). Trustee Glenn Harper, who spearheaded efforts to stop adding fluoride, said "he got a real good chuckle out of it." "Dr. Strangelove is one of my favorite movies," he said, although he added he hadn't thought about the …

Rather than resolving the water fluoridation issue based upon a movie made in 1964, how about doing so using a book written in 2010? Since I co-authored this text, "The Case Against Fluoride" (Chelsea Green), with two other scientists I have been waiting for a scientific response from fluoridation promoters. After 14 months there has been none. Instead we get treated to rants about Dr. …   more ›

(With Poll) Hartland Township to Close Tap on Extra Fluoride in Drinking Water

Board votes 5-2 Tuesday to become one of the few municipalities in Michigan to move away from the controversial additive after months of debate.

The Hartland Township Board of Trustees voted 5-2 Tuesday to immediately stop adding fluoride to its drinking water, joining an international movement that questions the additive's dental benefits and warns of possible health dangers that range from making bones brittle to an increased cancer risk. Fluoridation supporters countered the evidence was junk science or taken out of context while noting mainstream medical groups, ranging from the Michigan Department of Community Health and the American Cancer Society, support the practice. Some also say the move will give the township a reputation as a place swayed by conspiracy theories. The results of Tuesday's spirited debate — which one point became even a little theatrical — adds Hartland …

Fluoride, the active ingredient in many pesticides and rodenticides, is a powerful poison - more acutely poisonous than lead. Because of this, accidental over-ingestion of fluoride can cause serious toxic symptoms. Each year there are thousands of reports to Poison Control centers in the United States related to excessive ingestion of fluoride toothpastes, mouthrinses, and supplements. Water …   more ›

UPDATED: Hartland Township Board Debates, Decides to Wait on Vote to End Water Fluoridation

Trustees say they want more information on costs if treatment continues.

The Hartland Township Board of Trustees put off deciding whether to end water fluoridation until it receives more information about the costs necessary to meet a proposed new EPA recommendation. The 5-1 vote Tuesday came following a lengthy discussion where trustees debated to either end the practice altogether or invest money to control more precisely the level of fluoride added. Voting in favor of the delay were: Supervisor Bill Fountain, Treasurer Kathie Horning and Trustees Matt Germane, Joe Colaianne and Joe Petrucci. The lone dissenting vote came from Trustee Glenn Harper, who has been a staunch advocate against fluoridation based on health risks. He favored ending the practice for good or at least while the township studies its …
