What Are the Best Sledding Hills in Hartland?

What is your favorite place to sled in and around Hartland?

Nothing says "snow day" like gathering up the kids and heading to the nearest sledding hill for hours of winter fun. In Hartland, one of the most popular sledding spots is the hill behind Lakes Elementary, but if you are looking to travel to a different location, CBS Detroit has complied a list of some of the best hills to try. Farmington's Shiawassee Park was included on CBS Detroit's recent list of the best sledding hills in metro Detroit, with the caveat that the hill is so popular, it can sometimes be too crowded. Other nearby hills on the list include Northville's Cass Benton Park on Hines Drive between Six and Seven Mile Roads and Kensington Metropark in Milford. So, where is your favorite place to sled in and around Hartland? Let us…

What Are the Words to 'Auld Lang Syne'?

Hey Hartland, now you can stop mumbling through the New Year's Eve song and learn the actual lyrics.

Midnight strikes on New Year's Eve and someone inevitably starts belting the first few words of "Auld Lang Syne." Why? Well, it's tradition to get a little nostalgic on New Year's Eve. The song, attributed to Scottish poet and lyricist Robert Burns in 1788, is about reminiscing. "Auld Lang Syne" literally translates to "Old Long Since," and more roughly it means "long, long ago" or "days gone by." The custom began in Scotland to sing the poem on the last evening of the year, and the trend soon spread to other parts of the British Isles. British immigrants then brought "Auld Lang Syne" to other parts of the world, including America. A more modern variation on the tradition is to mumble through the forgotten words. But if you'd like to step …

Celebrating New Year's Day with Fireworks? Michigan Law Allows It

The start of the new year is among the 10 national holidays on which the state permits fireworks use.

This New Year's Day may be one of the noisiest on record for Michigan, thanks to revisions in state fireworks laws approved in 2012. The start of the new year is included on the list of national holidays for which the use of these colorful explosives is permitted by state law. Under Michigan's controversial fireworks law, citizens can ignite, discharge and use consumer fireworks the day before, day of and day after a national holiday, including New Year's Day. The list of approved fireworks now includes "projectiles," such as bottle rockets and Roman Candles. The 10 national holidays recognized by the law include: Many state residents and city leaders—including in Hartland—have expressed frustration with the Fireworks Safety Act of 2011. …

Toast the 2013 New Year with a Bottle of Champagne

Choosing the appropriate sparkling wine for New Year's Eve can make you dizzy before the first sip. Here's a handy guide to the intoxicating world of bubbles on a budget.

The pop of the Champagne cork is as much a part of the New Year’s Eve soundtrack as "Auld Lang Syne" and fireworks. The tiny, tickling bubbles evoke celebratory moods. With so many sparkling wines to choose from, picking the best bottle can be daunting. Prices for sparkling wine range from less than $10 to more than $500 per bottle. Keep in mind that while you usually get what you pay for, there are some great options for those of us on a budget.  Large “negociant” champagne houses that purchase much of their fruit, such as Veuve Clicquot, Bollinger, Roederer, Taittinger, Perrier Jouet and Nicolas Feuillatte, dominate the market. However, in the last decade or so, Champagne from small growers has gained some traction with Champagne …

How to Keep Your New Year's Resolution

Five tips to help you keep your resolution.

Are you making a resolution this year? Do you want to lose weight, gain a new skill or organize your house? Whatever your resolution is, here are some tips to help you stick to it throughout the year. 1. Make it attainable. Be sure that your resolution is attainable. Sticking to your monthly budget is attainable—making a million dollars may not be. 2. Tell everyone. If you tell everyone about your resolution, you are more likely to keep it. If you want to quit smoking, you can even go as far as telling your friends that you'll give them $50 if they catch you lighting up. 3. Be specific. If you want to get fit in the new year, set a specific goal. For example, instead of saying you want to get fit, say you want to lose 10 pounds and tone …
