Hartland Men's Lacrosse, Team 11, Suffers First Loss

Hartland lacrosse fell to Haslett-Williamston in season opener, 12-14.

Hartland Boy's Lacrosse hosted Haslett-Williamston Wednesday night and according to Coach Trenton Gafner, it was a "great" first game to the 2013 season because once the game got going it was a battle to the end. Haslett took the lead to start. Then Hartland had an 8 to 5 lead going into half. But Haslett came out strong in the second half and edged Hartland 14 to 12 to earn a great win. Both teams played with class and was a fun game. We just let it away from us. They seem to capitalize on our mistakes more in the second half and that is what got them the win.  "We learned a lot about who we are as a team," Gafner said. "We are excited to get back on the practice field to fix our mistakes. Seasons aren't won in March they are determined …

Dear Santa…… (I want to play lacrosse)

Hartland's girl middle school program will be hosting lacrosse registrations at Ore Creek Middle School on January 15 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

By Aaron Skomial Every year we have kids celebrating the joyful season of receiving gifts from Santa and family. They enjoy giving the gifts as well, but let’s be honest; most are really excited about receiving the gifts. So in light of the giving season what should every girl be asking for this season? Lacrosse equipment for the spring season! Okay, maybe not all girls have that at the top of their wish list, but I know a lot that do. Why is that?  Last season our girls from Hartland High School made it to the State Championship game and brought a lot of excitement to our community.  They played hard and came up a little short, but it wasn’t because they lacked effort. In July, the high school girls hosted a free clinic for K-8 players …

Hartland Cruises to Regional Semis

Hartland Ladies Lacrosse Takes Huron Valley 17-4.

By Hartland Lacrosse For the third time this year Hartland was able to defeat Huron Valley — this time in the first round of the Regional Playoffs. Hartland won Wednesday night's contest 17-4 at Lake Orion High School (home of the regional games). Scoring for Hartland were Natalie Sochacki with five goals; Ryan Skomial with four; and Amy Long with three. Taylor Pryde and Haley Crouse each scored twice with Ashley Collins adding one. In goal for Hartland was Tabitha Ferguson who had six saves in the game. Thanks also to her tough defensive teamates, Huron Valley had limited shooting opportunities. The win sets up a huge match-up next Wednesday versus Brighton. That game will also be played at Lake Orion High School — but this time the game …

Oh, What A Night

Hartland girls lacrosse is off to a good start.

By Aaron Skomial The women’s lacrosse season officially kicked off at the high school on Tuesday night. After a weekend of disappointing scrimmage losses, the team came out of the gates and tallied up 20 goals against Clarkston. Not only did they score 20, they clamped down on defense and allowed just six goals.   The game started slow and scoring was absent for the first 3 minutes. Once the first goal was scored, the goals just kept coming. The first goal of the season was scored by Natalie Sochaki. Clarkston came right back and scored the equalizer to tie it up at 1-1. That was the last time that the game was tied. The game was played with quick transitions and fantastic passing. The offense moved the ball effectively and the defense …

Hartland Women’s Lacrosse 2012…….State Championship or Bust!

Big expectations and unfinished business motivate this year's team.

By Aaron Skomial When you enter into a new season with any team, you have hopes for a successful season. There are not only hopes, but also an expectation to do very well this year for the women’s lacrosse team in Hartland. The team is heavily laden with senior talent that has played together since the eighth grade.  So what do we expect from this group? There should be a lot of scoring and fast paced games. That is the nature of the game, but this team exemplifies that. The team has had to wait all off-season to get another chance at going deep into the playoffs and win a state championship. For them, there is unfinished business. The team went to the regional final game and lost in sudden death overtime to the eventual state champion …

Shakin’ Off the Rust at GVSU

Hartland lacrosse players compete in the Winter Wonder LAX tournament at Grand Valley State University.

By Aaron Skomial As the girls lacrosse season gets closer, trying to find indoor opportunities to refine some lacrosse skills gets harder and harder. Fortunately for the kids, Grand Valley State University holds a Winter Wonder LAX tournament in February.  Hartland had eight girls take the challenge to put together a team to participate in the five on five tournament this past weekend. The tournament does not crown a champion, it just allows the kids to play lacrosse and have some fun. The team was led by seniors Haley Crouse, Rachael Sharpe, and Rachel Gibbs.  The balance of the team was constructed of two juniors, one sophomore, and two freshmen. The tournament was an opportunity to play against some great competition from all over the …

Hartland Whiz Kid — Freshman Wrestler Brings Impressive Record to Regionals

Austin Eicher shines on and off the mat.

Austin Eicher is making a name for himself not only in the Hartland High School wrestling world but across the state by defeating top-ranked rivals and even pinning 19 consecutive opponents earlier this season — all as a freshman. Eicher is ranked second in Division 1 going into individual regionals Saturday at L'Anse Creuse High School only behind freshman Justin Oliver from Davison. He has been wrestling since he was 5 years old, beginning at Powerhouse club team in Fenton and continuing through Hartland’s club team. With a record of 51-2, he may break Hartland’s most wins as a freshman record, which was set at 56 wins by brothers Matt and Jesse Bain. Eicher’s two losses were to sixth-ranked Mason Cleaver of Division 2 Holly. “(My …
