Young Student Describes Finding her Passion for New Language

Hartland Middle School student tells how her experience with new American Sign Language class has affected her.

By Jennifer Bauer Passion. Cannot be described in words, it cannot be given or shared with others; it must be felt by the one who finds it. The passion to which I am referring is a deep, all encompassing passion that when found, you may never be the same. I am not the same person who sauntered into eighth grade, confident but a little skeptical of the people and places around me. Every day I tell myself, don’t let the world change you, Jen. But maybe, just maybe, I could be changed for the better. And as soon as I found my passion I realized that it wasn’t the world that has changed me, it was passion that had. I could walk through the memory like it was a well rehearsed play. Or when you’re watching the most intense part of a film when …

Letter to the Editor: Community of Lake Tyrone Wants Their Voices Heard

Tyrone Lake resident Debbie Johnston explains the history of the Lake Tyrone Sewer System issue from the perspective of the residents involved.

Dear Hartland Patch: (Wednesday) night's meeting was disappointing to the residents of Tyrone Lake. We found out that all the informational packets we worked so hard to distribute went unread — except for one board member. These packets contained pertinent information regarding Lake Tyrone Sewer System and why the majority of the residents want to keep their sewer system and not hook-up to the Livingston Regional Sewer System. It seems that the basis of information to the Hartland Board members has only been from Brian Jonckheere the County Drain Commissioner- whose interest as I see it, is to spend 3.4 million dollars of the residents monies to take our liquids to Genesee County, when the MDEQ (Michigan Department of Environmental Quality…

Letter to the Editor: Planet Aid Collection Bins

Reader warns against nonprofit organizations associated with "Tvind."

Dear Editor, I was saddened to learn that your community has been littered with Planet Aid and the Institute for International Cooperation and Development (IICD) clothing collection boxes. Both of these non-profit groups are part of "Tvind," a cult-like Danish organization whose followers call themselves the Teachers Group. Most of their board members, and many of the managers, are Teachers Group members. Tvind is the common name given to the collection of over 200 businesses, non-profits, and schools run by member of the Teachers Group. Their net worth is over $860 million USD. Planet Aid is Tvind’s largest clothing collection operation in the USA, with close to 13,000 collection bins throughout major cities. The clothing is sold through …

Letter to the Editor: Teacher Appreciation Week

School Board Trustee Bill Gatewood reminds us to thank our teachers.

Dear Editor Somewhere along the line, most of us have had a teacher who impacted our lives in a profound way.  A teacher who encouraged us to pursue a particular skill or interest, someone who challenged us to achieve more or perhaps a teacher who saw something in us that we were unable or unwilling to see on our own. With this being teacher appreciation week, what better time to reach out and thank the teachers, past and present, who made a difference in our lives and continue to make a difference each and every day. In Hartland, we are blessed with an outstanding cadre of teachers who routinely go above and beyond to make the educational experience for the children in our community fun and challenging.  I appreciate the sacrifices they …

Local Resident Voices Concerns About Fitness Center Closing

Resident Scott Weigman discusses Hartland Schools misspent money issues.

Dear Hartland neighbors, I am writing you about a questionable situation the Hartland Consolidated Schools - Community Education, school superintendent and community education director have created.  As you may know, in February of 2010 the residents and taxpayers in Hartland approved a $28,000,000 bond for improvements to the school district. Some of this money was specifically earmarked for the Community Education department and more precisely the Hartland High School fitness center.  What many people do not know is that the fitness center is open to you - the public - and it is part of Hartland’s Caroselli Aquatic & Fitness Center.  In fact, due to an apathetic attitude by the school district for marketing, a majority of Hartland …

I live in the Hartland school district and I am at the High School at least four times a week. I did not know that this facility was available for public use. As it is the taxpayer who ultimately pays for the School System and all their equipment, WE should have access to it! The buildings and equipment should be clean and properly maintained for both student and taxpayer use. If properly managed…   more ›

Letter to the Editor: Community Shows its Generosity in 'Triple Money Monday'

'We’re so proud to be a part a community that cares so much,' writes the president of the Livingston County United Way.

Wow! We’ve been using that word a lot lately. It’s surreal to think about what took place on Monday through the Livingston County United Way’s Triple Money Monday on Dec. 19. Triple Money Monday has to be the biggest one-day fundraising event in the history of Livingston County. We’re so proud to be a part a community that cares so much. Livingston County residents stepped up to help in a big way. Thank you for your trust in our organization and supporting those we serve. We are grateful for the special donors who made Triple Money Monday a reality. Thank you to our friends at the Ted and Jane Von Voigtlander Foundation, and our two additional donors who wish to remain anonymous. These generous people gave our community something to strive…
