By Ceci Marlow Last night, prizes were awarded to three area students for their Grant Sweet Memorial Day essays entered in this contest. We are grateful to our sponsors--the Friends of Cromaine, the American Legion Post 1415-Hartland, Nancy Purtzenski, Sue Strouse, and an anonymous generous donor. They provide the funds for the three prizes of $300, $200, and $100. The contest was open to 7th through 12th grade students in Livingston County; we had 15 essays submitted from Charyl Stockwell Preparatory Academy, Hartland, and Howell. Alice Andrews, the director of the Hartland Senior Center, has been chosen as the 2013 Grand Marshal of the 78th Annual Hartland Memorial Day parade. As the senior center director for more than 20 years, Andrews was also nominated by Hartland Patch readers as one of the community’s “Greatest Person’s. In the Hartland Patch story, Community Education Director Michelle Otis called Andrews “one of the best sharers I know.” “She’s one of the greatest people in Hartland and I think it’s because not only her dedication to the job but her to dedication to people,” Otis said. “She has a way of modeling the way everyone should strive to be.” According to Community Life Newspaper, Andrews and her family moved to Livingston County in 1986, where she…

The Memorial Day race begins at 8 a.m. starting at Hartland High School with a course through the village of Hartland.
Preparations for the 8th Annual Hartland Memorial Day Fun Run & Walk are underway, organized this year by the Hartland High School football team under the direction of coach Brian Savage. Memorial Day Run/Walk participants have until May 26 to register online for the event and mail-in entries must be received by May 20, according to the event’s website. The cost for the race is $20 or $18 for runners 18 and under and seniors 60 and over. Race day registration will also be available for a cost of $25. The race begins at 8 a.m. on May 27 and offers three different distances of a 3K for walkers and a 5K or 10K for runners. Submissions for the Grant Sweet Essay Contest are now being accepted at the Cromaine District Library. Students from any Livingston County middle school or high school in grades 7 through 12 are eligible to interview a soldier or veteran and enter a 250-word essay about what their service meant to them. The contest is in memory of the library's former building manager Grant Sweet. Essays must be submitted no later than 8 p.m. on May 6 and are judged by a panel with cash prizes of $300, $200, and $100 awarded. Winning essays are also published in the Hartland Area Community Council’s annual Memorial Day Parade booklet the next year. The Hartland Area Community Council plans several events throughout the year for residents to enjoy, including Hartland's Memorial Day parade, luminary walk and other local events. Planning for the 2013 Memorial Day events is currently under way with HACC meetings scheduled for the first Monday of every month. The monthly meetings take place at Hartland Middle School from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and new volunteers are always welcome and encouraged to attend. The Luminary Walk took place Sunday night at the Hartland Cemetery. Honoring veterans for Memorial Day, residents were given the opportunity to remember their friends and loved ones who have served. Luminaries were placed on graves of veterans buried in the historic cemetery and Taps was played at dusk. Students from Hartland Middle School and Hartland High School were on hand as well, as re-entactors educating the crowd with stories from the past. Hartland students included:

On Thursday, the Village Manor Retirement community dedicated a wall to their resident veterans in honor of Memorial Day. During the ceremony, owner Frank Crouse dedicated the wall to publicly honor and thank the residents for their service. Each resident received their own plague displaying their portraits and years of service. The artwork on the wall was designed by Devon Shallman whose grandfather was also a veteran. The gold filigree scrolling and stars represent the US military armametation and the color blue was chose to honor the founding fathers. The Hartland Community Pancake Breakfast starts at 7am -11am. All you can eat pancakes with sausage, apple sauce, orange juice and coffee. $6 for adults and $4 for children and senior citizens.
