Eleven Michiganders will be joining Team USA for the 2012 Summer Games in London.
The 2012 Olympics begin in London on July 27. Michigan will be sending 11 participants to join the 519 other members of Team USA to compete for gold and glory, according to the team roster provided by the U.S. Olympic Committee. Michigan's youngest athlete is gymnast Jordyn Wieber, who just turned 17. The state's eldest athlete is Daryl Szarenski at age 44. Seven of the Michiganders are female and four are male. Just five states will not be sending any athletes: New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Carolina and West Virginia. Need $363 million? Who doesn't, right? Well, Tuesday could be the day. The Mega Millions lottery prize has been increased to $363 million, one of the highest jackpots ever. The next drawing will be 11 p.m. Tuesday, so you can still vie for a piece. This is the third-largest prize in the multi-state lottery's history, behind a $390-million jackpot in 2007 and $380-million jackpot in 2011, according to megamillions.com. Earlier this week, Michigan made national news because five tickets, matching five of the six Mega Millions numbers, were sold at the same Meijer store in Northville. Wisconsin's travel website is using a mitten image on its travel website; some Michiganians think Wisconsin should keep their hands off our mitten.
Do you think it's thumbs-up or thumbs-down to Wisconsin's use of a mitten image in its winter promotions? According to a story on Mlive.com, the Wisconsin Department of Tourism is using the image of a slightly misshapen mitten to look like the state of Wisconsin on its winter travel site. This has prompted some good-natured jousting between the folks in Wisconsin who think their state is shaped like a mitten, and Michiganians who know there can only be one mitten state. We went looking for faces of survival. We found inspiration. Patch asked Michigan women and men who have fought breast cancer to share their struggles, tears and triumphs with us during October – Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer survivor Cynde Lebert, 59, of Canton, tells newly diagnosed women: “You'll be fine. You're alive and that's the most important thing.” Farmington Hills resident Dick Jaeger, 70, is one of the approximately 2,140 men diagnosed each year with breast cancer. DETROIT — Thousands of people from throughout Michigan gathered in downtown Detroit Monday afternoon to hear President Obama speak after the annual Labor Day parade. While the president spoke about jobs, labor and the importance of collective bargaining, Patch asked members of the audience to talk about what they would like to see our nation's leaders, as well as those in power locally, do to help the state.
