Alice Andrews, the director of the Hartland Senior Center, has been chosen as the 2013 Grand Marshal of the 78th Annual Hartland Memorial Day parade. As the senior center director for more than 20 years, Andrews was also nominated by Hartland Patch readers as one of the community’s “Greatest Person’s. In the Hartland Patch story, Community Education Director Michelle Otis called Andrews “one of the best sharers I know.” “She’s one of the greatest people in Hartland and I think it’s because not only her dedication to the job but her to dedication to people,” Otis said. “She has a way of modeling the way everyone should strive to be.” According to Community Life Newspaper, Andrews and her family moved to Livingston County in 1986, where she…

A 21-year-old Hartland High School graduate is still in the running to become the 2013 RIFF Rock Girl for 101 WRIF in Detroit. Lyndsey Coleman of Brighton, made it through to the Top 8 of voting for a chance to make it to the final four contestants. "If I make it to Top 4, I get to go to Puerta Vallarta, Mexico," Coleman said. "The winner gets a year on-air contract with WRIF and a $40,000 salary." Coleman began her quest to become the next "Rock Girl" earlier this month. "I'm a small town girl with big plans," Coleman said previously. "This would put me a million steps closer to an amazing future. I'm a writer, I love music and working in radio is my dream." By Hartland Schools Jill Fons, the district’s Transportation Supervisor, has been a member of the HCS family for 23 years. She began her career here as a driver, then dispatcher, and for the last 12 years she has served as our transportation supervisor. Her list of certifications include Certified Transportation Director, MSBO; Michigan Association of Pupil Transportation (MAPT) member; Train the Trainer Certification; Operation Lifesaver Certification; NHTSA Child Passenger Safety Certification; Highway Watch Certification; and Drug & Alcohol Reasonable Suspicion Supervisor Certification. A 21-year-old Hartland High School graduate is in the running to become the 2013 RIFF Rock Girl for 101 WRIF in Detroit. Lyndsey Coleman of Brighton, is currently in the running for the Top 32 and needs votes to advance to the next rounds of Sexy 16 and Exotic 8. "I'm a small town girl with big plans," Coleman said. "This would put me a million steps closer to an amazing future. I'm a writer, I love music and working in radio is my dream." The Top 4 women with enough votes will travel to Puerta Vallarta in Mexico for a photo shoot. The final winner will reign as the 2103 WRIF Rock Girl and become the entertainment reporter for the year. After three kids and 16 years of no exercise, 40-year-old Amy Kozle of Hartland said she was ready for a lifestyle change, which propelled the local mother to take the stage in her first bodybuilding competition last month. After months of intense training, a strict diet and unwavering commitment, Kozle transformed her body into a lean mass of muscle, showing off her efforts in a bikini competition where she placed in both divisions. As a mother, posing on stage in front of an audience and judges, Kozle admitted it was a nerve-racking experience, but said hearing the cheers from her husband and children in the audience helped her get through it. “If you zoom into one of my pictures, you can see stretch marks on my belly and I can’t hide …

Patrick Thompson of Hartland has plans to open new Highland deli restaurant by mid- April.
With a menu selection that offers an eclectic choice of sandwich options, Down the Street Deli has plans to open mid-April in the former Zaydee's Coffee House location at 2330 S Milford Rd. in Highland. Combining items such as raspberries and ham or turkey and strawberries, owner Patrick Thompson of Hartland says he doesn’t know how to cook, but he can make a sandwich. “I've never tried to cook," he said. "But people have had some of my sandwiches before and they always told me I would have open a store." Hannah Schultz and Raven O'Rourke delivered handwritten thank you notes to the Hartland Fire Department as a random act of kindness.
Carrying more than 35 “thank you” letters handwritten by their fellow classmates, two Hartland High School students visited the Hartland Fire Department last week to share a random act of kindness. Hannah Schultz and Raven O'Rourke, both high school juniors, had set up a table during their lunch period where students were able to stop by and write notes to the local firefighters with messages such as “Thank you for protecting us - you guys rock,” and “ You have inspired me, thank you.” Delivering their random act of kindness messages to the fire department, the Hartland students said they have enjoyed surprising people with many of the other random acts they have done throughout their school year. Alice Andrews, the long-time director of Hartland’s Senior Center will be beginning a new phase of her life and career by shortening her hours and going into semi-retirement starting this summer. It’s a decision that Community Education Director Michelle Otis says will help Andrews continue to be involved with the center while giving her a more flexible schedule with reduced hours and responsibilities. “We’re doing our best to blend her needs with our needs and I’m sure it will work out,” Otis said. Currently, Andrews is responsible for almost every aspect of the center, including programming, according to Otis, so the center is looking to hire a Program Coordinator that will help manage the current programs while creating new ones. “We…
