70-year-old Jim Brake is a station role model and "great example" for his fellow firefighters in Hartland.
On March 3, eight Hartland firefighters completed a climb at the GM Renaissance Center to support the American Lung Association. Climbing 70 floors in full gear, it was the first year the local department participated in the effort and among them was 70-year-old Hartland firefighter Jim Brake, who climbed one floor for each year of his life. Brake, who has been at the Hartland Deerfield Fire Authority for 16 years, decided to participate in honor of his mother who passed away from cancer as well as a close friend who is currently battling the disease. Bryan Condra was awarded the "Young Person of Distinction" award by the Livingston County United Way.
Hartland High School’s senior class president, captain of the varsity swim and dive team, MHSSA scholar athlete and Homecoming king Bryan Condra added another award to his long resume of accomplishments. The Hartland senior was awarded the 2012 “Young Person of Distinction” award by the Livingston County United Way on Thursday, which is a “community-wide, county-wide recognition and comes from a human service perspective,” according to United Way Director Nancy Rosso. “He’s an amazing young person,” Rosso said. “The list goes on and on and when I was giving him the award I didn’t even read half the stuff on the list.” Aside from also being a varsity athlete in several sports, Condra is also a member of the National Honor Society, an Eagle…

Alyssa Mattucci and Marissa Mattioli are organizing a community beautification project for their school's FCCLA group.
Two Hartland High School juniors are organizing a community beatification project that will include a clean-up effort and planting of trees. Alyssa Mattucci and Marissa Mattioli are the environmental ambassadors for the high school’s Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), a community service group that each year picks a project to complete. “Last year we picked up trash at Kensington Metro park, so this year we just wanted to expand on that,” junior Alyssa Mattuci said. The two students will be teaming up with the Heart of Michigan Girl Scout Troupe on March 24 to clean up the park and will be planting trees at the high school, Hartland Middle School and other local businesses on April 10. Bulletproof Snow will debut their new album on March 23 at 59 West.
A Hartland-based teen rock band, Bulletproof Snow, announced the launch of its debut album/EP titled, Punished for my Innocence. The launch party will take place on March 23 at 7 p.m. at 59 West in Highland and will feature music from local artists as well as a performance by the band. There will also be a chance to attend a live studio recording session at Metro 37 Studios in Rochester Hills. Bulletproof Snow consists of four Hartland teenagers, Trey McLaughlin, Jake Yacobelli, Matt Coon and Connor Cheney who have played more than 60 shows in Michigan and Ohio since forming in 2012. Peggy Storey has taught in Hartland for 23 years.
By Hartland Schools Peggy Storey has been living and teaching in Hartland for 23 years. She began her career here in a split position between Village and Round Elementary as a special education teacher. The following year she moved to Farms Middle School and then to Hartland Middle School when it opened. Peggy received her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from Central Michigan University and received certificates in Special Education for the cognitively impaired from Columbus College in Georgia, and for the emotionally impaired and Teacher Consultant from Central Michigan. By Hartland Schools Linda Hartley is currently serving her 36th year as a teacher in Hartland Consolidated Schools, and she has spent all 36 at Lakes Elementary School! She was hired immediately prior to the 1977/78 school year – the year Lakes opened – for a 1st/2nd grade combination class. She taught the split class for a few years and 1st grade for a couple of years before moving on to a 2nd grade classroom and she’s never looked back. Linda received both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Michigan (so it was an easy transition to Hartland’s “Blue & Gold”.) On Dec. 19, Time magazine named President Obama their Person of the Year, again! The magazine invited votes on 40 candidates, including the president, Gabby Douglas and Kim Jong Un. Other options included The Mars Rover and the Higgs Boson Particle, Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi, and Apple CEO Tim Cook. But, the president took the title again four years after he first won the award as president-elect in 2008. But who cares about the same-old, same-old?
