Hartland, County Could Resume Talks on Road Patrol Contracts

The contracts expired last month after Hartland Township declined an extension to them.

Livingston County officials say they are open to resuming talks about an extension of the Livingston County Sheriff's contract in Hartland Township, according to the Press & Argus. As Patch previously reported, for the past four decades, the Livingston County Sheriff’s Department has provided road patrol services with full-time deputies in Hartland and Tyrone Townships. But due to rising costs, Hartland Township declined a two-year extension to the contract in March, thus letting the contract expire. According to the Press & Argus, Hartland Township drafted a proposal last week that would have the township pay for the cost of one full deputy, as long as a second patrol car was made available to at no additional cost. Both Hartland and …

Hartland Officials Say Re-Model of Road Patrol is Possible Solution

"If the entire county wants to keep the same level of service, they need to ante up here and not have Hartland and Tyrone subsidize it," said Hartland Trustee Joe Petrucci.

During Tuesday night's Hartland Township meeting, Hartland manager James Wickman gave a brief update regarding an upcoming meeting that will take place this week between the Livingston County Board of Commissioners, Livingston County Sheriff Bob Bezotte and Hartland and Tyrone Townships to discuss the road patrol contracts that will expire at the end of the month. Wickman said there was the possibility of some agreement being reached between the groups by using new strategies and “out-of-the-box” thinking when it comes to their current model of road patrol. “We’re fully prepared for April 1 to receive the level of service that all our neighbors receive and that our residents pay county taxes for,” Wickman said. “Our interest in this is to …

A meeting between Hartland and Tyrone Townships and the Livingston County Board of Commissioners will take place next week regarding road patrol contacts.

Officials of Hartland Township will be resuming talks next week with the Livingston County Board of Commissioners regarding road patrol contracts for Hartland and Tyrone Townships.  According to a letter sent by Hartland Township Manager James Wickman to county commissioners and Livingston County Sheriff Bob Bezotte, Hartland officials stated they were “open to further dialogue about the possibility of contract road patrol in the future.” On March 6, Hartland and Tyrone Township officials announced they were declining a proposed contract with the sheriff’s department after questions arose in February regarding the rising costs of the police contracts.  No formal communication has taken place between the parties involved since Feb. 21, …

Hartland Township Declines Sheriff Contract

Officials from Hartland and Tyrone Townships voted unanimously against renewing road patrol contracts with the Livingston County Sheriff's Department.

Hartland Township officials announced today that they, along with Tyrone Township, would be declining a proposed two-year extension of the Livingston County Sheriff’s contract. According to a press release from Hartland Township, both boards voted unanimously against the road patrol contracts for the two communities. The contracts will expire this month. The decision was based on a month of analysis and discussion of costs and benefits of dedicated patrols, according to the press release. Following a Livingston County Board of Commissioners meeting on Monday night, the press release states that the Commissioners “rejected concerns and questions raised by the townships” when voting on contract terms.  Without the police contracts, township …

Hartland Eagle, I think you mean Genoa Twp. Green Oak, actually, has its own department (and a population of 17,000, BTW . . . not much more than Hartland). Still, I think something that's missing from this argument is geography fits. Brighton Twp. and Genoa Twp. both benefit from the closeness of other departments that can quickly come to their aid. Brighton Twp. has the state police post inside…   more ›
