3 Hartland Wrestlers Advance to Medal Rounds in MHSSA State Finals

Senior Mitchel Thomas, junior Austin Eicher and sophomore Jacob Gorial will wrestle at the Palace today in the MHSAA Finals beginning at 4:45pm.

By Danna Castillo Of the eight Hartland wrestlers that qualified, three of them made it through to the medal rounds. That doesn't mean the five that didn't are any less impressive. Making it to the Palace is no easy feat. Just getting there means you are of the elite.  The MHSAA State Finals is the Top 16 wrestlers in the entire state in each weight class. And if getting to the top 16 wasn't hard enough...you then have to qualify in the top eight to place.  Lose one round and you are headed to the consolation rounds to fight your way back. In wrestling "speak" they call it the Blood Rounds.  Eicher defeated Sterling Heights Stevenson's Tabu Gantt - Honorable Mention by Tech fall 18-3, Ypsilanti Lincoln Junior Jordan Markey by :45 pin, and …

Hartland Wrestlers Give Valiant Effort, Fall Short

Detroit Catholic Central wins the MHSAA State finals, Davison defeats Hartland, 44-15.

By Danna Castillo The MHSAA Semi Finals didn't end the way the Eagles would have hoped. There were plenty of great matches but the Eagles didn't come out on top of this one ending their regular dual season with a still, very impressive 33-2 and their 12th consecutive appearance at the MHSAA Team State Finals. The Eagles were on fire in the Quarter Finals versus #8 Ranked Macomb Dakota. Junior Josh Charneski started things off quickly with a 1:13 pin over Dakota's Hegarty, Freshman Sage Castillo followed suit at 112 with a :57 pin, then came Junior Nate Hughes (119) with a pin in 1:53 and Junior Justin Rollins pinning Karam in 1:18 at 130. It has become a trademark of these Hartland wrestlers that once one person gets a pin or a win, they …

Wrestlers Compete for Title in Battle Creek

Hartland wrestlers move on to semi-final round after a solid win against Macomb Dakota.

By Danna Castillo It all leads to Battle Creek. Twelve straight years for Coach Todd Cheney and his Eagles. Not a small accomplishment in anyone's book.   The 32-1 third rankded Eagles took on Macomb Dakota (37-4) in what was Macomb Dakota's first appearance in Battle Creek for the MHSAA Team State Finals. The Cougars fell to the Eagles 42-14 in what has been typical Hartland fashion.  Winning 10 of the 14 match ups, 4 by pin & 2 by major decision, the Eagles continue to feed off each other and continue to find a way to win. “They had an incredible season, a sad story, they had a purpose to wrestle,”  Cheney said referring to the loss of Dakota coach Bill Witgen to cancer in September. “They’ll be back. They should be proud. They’re a …

GPA has no bearing on anything. The curriculum is obviously lacking, since so many kids don't even meet minimum standards. The kids are getting good grades in a curriculum that doesn't teach them what they ought to be learning. Everybody feels good about it, though, because they have a nice GPA and the sports teams do well. It's sad, and our kids deserve better.   more ›

Hartland Eagles to Wrestle for Team Regional Championship Tomorrow

Tournament is at 5:30 p.m. at Waterford Mott; Eagles will wrestle Farmington Hills Harrison in semis.

About a decade ago, Hartland wrestlers like Austin Eicher and Jacob Gorial were beginning their careers in the Hartland Wrestling Club. I would not call it "great"...the regional championship team; competitive team, loaded with talent, exciting to watch..but it took a 45 foot heave from the backup center or they would have been out in the first round. Last year, they finished 3-7 in division play and a 10-12 record overall. This, with a true DI player on the roster, which most schools in MI don't have. Yes, thank you coach for …   more ›

The Bulldogs defeated the Eagles 29-23 Wednesday night.

After a nail-biting meet, the Brighton Bulldogs continued its winning streak Wednesday night and defeated the Hartland Eagles 29-23 for the first time in 10 years. The Bulldogs led the first several matches 16-0 when Hartland wrestler Matt Ostermiller pinned Chris Raby from Brighton, gaining the Eagles six points. Hartland wrestler Nate Hughes then put the Eagles in the lead 17-16. Brighton Coach Sam Amine said there were really two champions tonight, as both schools did excellent. "What a hard fought match," Amine said. "I give my hat off to both programs. We had 14 excellent matches, as you can tell, we only had one pin each. It was incredible. It was just hard-nosed wrestling. Both kids really went at it for their programs and every …
