@Timothy G. Mack: Before you toss out references to Rosa Parks, you might want to familiarize yourself with what actually happened that day in Alabama.

Mrs. Parks got on the bus and sat in a middle seat, in the designated "colored" section, not in "a seat at the front of the bus."

The bus filled up, both the white and the colored sections. A white man boarded. The bus driver ordered Mrs. Parks and three other black riders to give up their seats for the white man.

Even though only one seat was needed for the white man, four black passengers were told to move because black passengers were not permitted even to sit across the aisle in the same row as white passengers. The law permitted the bus driver to eject black passengers from their seats in this way, even if the colored section was full and it meant they would have to either stand or get off the bus.

Mrs. Parks refused, and was arrested. And history was made.

It's an impactful story - hardly as simple as her taking "a seat at the front of the bus." I realize that you were just trying to make a point about the rights of American citizens in order to support your position on guns, but it's best to fully understand the things you comment on.

I'm happy that Marlene learned early on the perils of overextending herself financially and that she made a point of avoiding that situation in the future. Not everyone does. She then set out to manage her finances to be able to retire early, and she is apparently going to meet that goal.

But for an article in a "Smart Spending" series, this one is neither informative or useful. As has been mentioned, supporting only oneself as opposed to supporting a family or elders makes it a whole different - and undoubtedly simpler - ballgame.

And although there is no mention of the size of Marlene's income but she is able to save 45% of it, it's obvious that she must be relatively well-compensated.

She contributes the allowable maximums to a 401(k), IRA, and health savings account, and maintains yet another personal investment account. And pays a financial advisor to help manage them. All smart financial moves. But a pipe dream for many hard-working, frugal, budgeting Americans with less lucrative incomes.

World travel with five-star accommodations? Making the most of travel miles? Seriously? The average family can't afford enough air travel to collect travel perks for future trips. Flying is expensive even for a single person on a moderate income.

I wish Marlene the best in the future. She's made a good life for herself after learning a big lesson about credit card debt. But I'm baffled as to why her story is included in a "creative ways to save money" series.

I support the decision of the Board. I do understand that there are complex politics in a school system - I spent some time working in the Hartland district years ago. But enough tip-toeing around Mrs. Sahouri. She was not maligned by the Board, considering the blunders she made. She was treated (more than) fairly. It's encouraging that the Board rejected a $525,000 payoff. It takes my neighborhood and me a very long time and a lot of hard work to earn that much tax money.

Good grief! The actions of these three miscreants make me sick.

Where do people get the gall to think they're entitled to steal, in some cases repeatedly? It's not enough we've got "big shots" ripping us off every day?

Or maybe that's what makes some of us regular folk feel entitled to take what's not theirs. To see three stories in a row reported like this is discouraging. Gotta make you wonder - for every one that gets caught, how many didn't?

    Ugh. Thieves stink.

Congratulations, President Obama. And congratulations to the Democrats across the country who succeeded in unseating some of the radical Tea Party libertarians. We can only hope that the obstructionist Republicans in the House understand that this is a mandate from the citizenry for more cooperation and less obstinate partisanship when it comes to the best interests of the United States.

Since the election in 2008, Republican Party leaders openly and obnoxiously declared that their most important goal was to make Barack Obama a one-term President - even if it meant cutting off their noses to spite their own faces.

Time to change the channel and see what things are like in the real world - not just on Fox News.

@ R Gibson - I entirely agree with FHVoice, and I'm not a hired hack for anybody. Just because someone with a different opinion than yours expresses themselves clearly and well doesn't always mean they're part of a consipiracy.

And before you make any further misguided, territorial complaints about this article being an exclusive forum solely for "the residents of bloomfield," please note that I am reading it on Hartland Patch. Clearly it has been published over a widespread geographical area with an invitation for all to respond.

Lori S is correct, Hartland Dad. Only I think it's been closer to 40 years. I was a young woman when they first talked about such a plan. At this point I'm just wondering if I'll live long enough to see it happen!

Installing the flasher is pointless. It's no more than a glorified Stop sign for Hacker traffic and meaningless for M-59 traffic. I'd like to think that it's just temporary, and that a regular traffic signal will replace it. But if that's the case, why not just install the regular light in the first place and set it to flash until people get used to seeing it, then switch it to fully functional? Personally, I'd love to know what MDOT was thinking when they came up with this flasher idea.
