Hartland's Cardboard Regatta Prepares to Set Sail

The 3rd Annual Cardboard Regatta will take place on July 20 starting at 8 a.m.

Hartland’s annual Cardboard Regatta is preparing to set sail next Saturday and entries for the event are still being accepted.

The fundraiser is sponsored by the Hartland Rotary Club and takes place on Lake Walden at the Waldenwoods Resort.

The community is invited to come and race any boat, as long as it is made of corrugated cardboard, according to the event’s website.

Other building qualifications include: 

  • Paddles and decorations are not required to be made of cardboard. 
  • The crew compartment may NOT be enclosed. Exiting the boat may NOT be impeded in any way.
  • Decorations are allowed as long as they do not affect the structural strength or buoyancy of the boat.

Boat racers will compete in heats and follow a designated course with winners moving on to compete in the final race.

Awards will be presented in a variety of categories and last year's winners include:

Race winners included:

  • First place: Bad Kitty
  • Second Place: Swamp People
  • Third Place: Trusty Choice II

Pride of the Fleet Award:

  • Swamp People

The Pirates Derby:

  • Hockey Town

Most Spectacular Sinking:

  • Big Cheese

Registration fees include:

  • Free for youth entries
  • $20 for family entries
  • $100 for corporate entries

The all-day event begins at 8 a.m. and includes a pancake breakfast with a lunch and beer tent opening at 12 p.m. Boat rentals, such as canoes and kayaks, will also be available during the event.
